Langli (originally Langeleje , German: long camp) is a small, uninhabited marshland island in Ho Bay near Esbjerg on the Danish North Sea coast. Langli extends over two kilometers from northwest to southeast, with an area of 0.8 km², and can be reached via a four-kilometer mudflat path from Ho . To protect bird life, visits are only allowed between July 16 and September 15.

The island belongs to the Varde municipality in the Syddanmark region and is located in the parish of Ho Sogn . It was once part of the Harde Vester Horne Herred in what was then Ribe Amt , from 1970 to 2007 it belonged to Blåvandshuk Municipality , Ribe Amt .

history

Langli was part of a peninsula until the Burchardi flood in 1634. Then a second peninsula ( Skallingen ) began to form on the lake side , which has since shielded Langli from the open sea.

The island was used for agriculture as early as the 16th century, but it wasn't until 1840 that two families settled there permanently. They dug up the island and successfully farmed the land. In 1911 there were 38 residents and even a school. The destruction caused by two storm surges and the state's refusal to support the reconstruction of the dykes meant that no residents had been registered on the island since 1913. In 1982 the Danish state bought the island. A holiday home from the 1940s now serves as a refuge.

Flora and fauna

Numerous birds such as seagulls and terns breed on Langli . The island can therefore only be entered after the breeding season has ended.
