Jordsand was a small Danish Hallig in the Wadden Sea south of Rømø and east of List on Sylt . In 2001 it sank into the floods of the North Sea and has since formed a high sand .

history

The island was recorded in King Waldemar's earth book in 1231, on her a farm called Hjortsand (cf. Danish hjort "deer" and sand "sand") existed. In prehistoric times it was probably connected to both the mainland and the area of today's island of Sylt. The multi mounds occupied Hallig lost by several storm surges continuously in size. It measured 40.7 hectares in 1807, but by 1841 it shrank to 35 hectares. In 1873 it was 18.4 hectares, in 1936 7.2 hectares, and in 1973 2.3 hectares. The Hallig belonged to the municipality of Jerpstedt . In 1867 it became Prussian as part of the province of Schleswig-Holstein . After a storm surge flooded the last terp in 1895, Jordsand was only used as pastureland and then for bird watching. In order to promote bird protection , the association for the establishment of bird sanctuaries on the German coasts - Jordsand , was founded in 1907 , since 1966 it has been called the Jordsand association .

In 1910/1911 Jens Wand was Vogelwart on Jordsand and reported on the total destruction of the hut in a severe storm surge on November 6, 1911.

As a result of the referendum in Schleswig in 1920, Jordsand became Danish again. Although the state had taken coastal protection measures to preserve the Hallig since the 1970s , the remaining vegetation was completely flooded by the sea in the winter of 1998/99. It has not been officially registered since 2001. Their remains form part of the Jordsands Flak sandbank .
