Location and history

There is a terp on Habel , the Norderwarft, with a bird sanctuary, which is only manned by a bird warden in summer. In the 19th century there was a second terp, the Süderwarft. However, it disappeared towards the end of the century, when it was already relocated, off the south coast in the sea.

Habel lies in the protection zone I of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park . Therefore, the general public is not allowed to enter the Hallig. The Hallig is owned by the State of Schleswig-Holstein . Like the Halligen Norderoog and Südfall , it is looked after by the Jordsand association based in Ahrensburg . Habel serves as a breeding and resting area for many sea birds. The Hallig receives its special significance as a grazing area for the brent goose , but also through the occurrence of the arctic tern .

Habel has been uninhabited since 1924. In 1871 there were still 12 inhabitants, in 1905 only 3.
