The Uthörn is a German research cutter belonging to the Biological Institute of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research . Bereedert is Kutter by the shipping company F. Laeisz (Bremerhaven) GmbH.

history

The research cutter was built under the hull number 280 on the ship shipyard Gebr. Schlömer in Oldersum . The keel was laid on July 1, 1981, the launch on April 5, 1982. The ship was completed in August 1982.

The cutter is named after the North Sea island of Uthörn . In 1982 it replaced the previous construction of the same name, 24.02 meters long and 6.39 meters wide, which was built in 1944 as a war  fish cutter 492 and converted in 1947 into a research cutter of the Biological Institute Helgoland .

In 2019, a new successor building of roughly the same size with a particularly low-emission drive, which is scheduled to go into service at the end of 2022, was put out to tender. The contract to build the ship, which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) with 14.45 million euros, was awarded to the Fassmer shipyard in Berne in August 2020 .

Technical data and equipment

The ship is propelled by two twelve - cylinder four - stroke diesel engines from the manufacturer Motoren-Werke Mannheim (type: TBD 232 V 12), each with an output of 231  kW , which each act on a variable pitch propeller via reduction gears . The ship thus reaches a speed of up to 10  kn . The ship is equipped with an electrically powered bow thruster .

Two generators powered by MWM diesel engines (type: D 226-6) are available to generate electricity on board.

The research cutter is equipped with a dry and a wet laboratory. It is used for research trips in the German Bight, but also for the supply of the biological institute of the AWI on Helgoland . The ship can stay at sea for five days, covering 1200  nautical miles . There is space for two scientists on board. Up to 25 people can be embarked on day trips.
