The Westerheversand lighthouse stands on a terp in front of the village of Westerhever . The lighthouse is the landmark of the Eiderstedt peninsula in Schleswig-Holstein .

Data

The Westerheversand lighthouse is a sea, cross- mark and guide light . The height of the fire is 41 meters, the height of the structure 40 meters. The range of the light is around 21 nautical miles (about 39 kilometers). The indirect visibility of the light beam is up to 55 kilometers. With a clear view he can still be seen on Heligoland .

A belt lens is used for the optics to circle the two groups of three vertical apertures each. The identification is: every 15 seconds three interruptions of the - depending on the direction - white, red or green light through short dark phases (Ubr. (3) wrgn.-15s, international: Oc (3) WRG 15s). The sequence of phases is 1 sec. Dark, 2 sec. Light, 1 sec. Dark, 2 sec. Light, 1 sec. Dark and 8 sec. Light. The international serial number is B 1652.

history

The tower was built in 1906 on Westerheversand around 1000 meters in front of the sea dike on a four-meter high mound with pile foundation (127 thick, long oak piles) and a concrete base. The tower was assembled from 608 bolted together, 130-tonne cast-iron plates, so-called tubbings , on a brick base. The iron plates came from the Isselburger Hütte in the Münsterland . There are nine floors inside the tower. Lighthouse keeper's houses were built on both sides of the tower. The Stockenstieg has been leading to the lighthouse from the east-northeast since 1929 , and in 1981 a concrete path from the west-northwest was added.

The beacon was put into operation on May 26, 1908. A carbon arc lamp served as the light source until 1974 , drawing the necessary 70 volts direct current from a generator with buffer batteries driven by two diesel units. The burn time of a carbon rod was around nine hours, then it had to be replaced. In 1951 the units were connected to the public power grid. In 1975 the carbon arc lamp was replaced by a modern 2000 watt xenon short arc lamp with a light intensity of 183,000 candela .

After decades beacon guards had done their service to the lighthouse, it is now automatically Tonning monitored from. The two former caretakers' houses now house a nature protection station of the Wadden Sea National Park , which is looked after by the nature conservation society Schutzstation Wattenmeer .

The tower can be visited since 2001. The way back is also possible in summer via the restored historic Stockenstieg through the salt marshes. In 2006 the lighthouse was repainted within three months; during this time it was covered and closed to visitors. In July 2007 the centenary of the ignition of the fire in the tower was celebrated (prematurely).

The lighthouse as an advertising motif

The Westerheversand lighthouse was used intensively as an advertising motif by the Frisian brewery in Jever from the 1970s . The campaign was criticized because a Lower Saxony beer brand advertised with a North Frisian motif and it was advertised with the slogan “ Like the country, like the Jever. " linked. The lighthouse is also shown on the tins of the " Norda " canned fish.

The lighthouse can also be seen on the cinema posters for the film Otto - Der Ausserfriesische , although it does not appear in the film and the lighthouse seen in the film is the Pilsum lighthouse .

Stamp

In 2005 the lighthouse appeared on a 55 cent value of the special postage stamp series lighthouses .

model

The lighthouse and the keeper's houses were modeled by Kibri .
