A bottle of Jever Pilsener

Jever is a German beer brand named after its town of origin, Jever , and has been brewed by the Frisian Brewery in Jever since 1848 .

history

When the Frisian Brewery in Jever was founded by Diedrich König in 1848, it was just one of many breweries in the region. After his death in 1867, his son sold the brewery. The new owner Theodor Fetköter began to transform the small family business into a large brewery, to advertise and to make special bottles. In 1894 he was significantly involved in the first water pipeline for the city of Jever.

The First World War was a difficult time for the brewery, as the son Theodor Fetköters, who had meanwhile taken over the management of the brewery, fell at the front. Finally, the brewery was sold again in 1922, this time to the Hamburg-based Bavaria-St.-Pauli-Brauerei , which today belongs to the Danish Carlsberg Group. At that time the beer from Jever was already known nationwide, and from 1934 it was sold under the name "Jever Pilsener", which is still valid today. After the Second World War , the situation was initially critical again - due to a lack of fuel, beer was only sold to self-collectors directly at the brewery, and you had to drive to the farms in the area to get barley .

After the immediate post-war period was over, the situation in Jever improved again. The best-selling beer was an export beer of the "Jever Export" brand, which was brewed until 1990. In the course of the 1960s the pilsner became more and more popular and the sales of “Jever Pilsener” increased. During this time the brewery was significantly expanded and expanded.

Since 1994 the brewery has belonged to the Dortmunder Brau und Brunnen Group, which has been part of the Radeberger Group within the Oetker Group since 2004 .

Today the brewery has around 270 employees and around 60,000 bottles are filled every hour. In the mirrored towers, which have shaped the cityscape since the early 1980s, there are three times five storage tanks of 240,000 liters each, in which the green beer matures to completion after fermentation in the fermentation tanks.

The brewery offers tours of the production facility with an expert guide by appointment. The tour also includes a walk through the attached historical brewery museum. Here you get an insight into everyday brewery life as it was around 100 years ago. In 2007, more than 33,000 guests took the opportunity to visit.

pronunciation

The Jever beer is not spoken [ ˈjeːf Fernseh ], but [ ˈjeːvɐ ] by the brewery (e.g. in TV advertising) and in national general usage, in contrast to the city that gave it its name and unlike in Frisian . The “V” in the place name Jever corresponds to the “V” of many northern German city names, such as Wilhelmshaven , Cuxhaven , Bremerhaven or Hanover .

In the district of Friesland and in western Lower Saxony, the "V" is spoken in the beer name as in the name of the city [ ˈjeːfɐ ].

Products

The brewery produces the following beers:

The production of the black beer "Jever Dark", brewed since 2002 , was stopped in 2008. In 2010, due to poor sales figures, the production of the Maibock, which was brewed again for the first time since 1991, was stopped in 2006.

The best-selling beer from the Jever brand is Jever Pilsener, which makes up 75% of total production. Jever Pilsener is also available in a 20-liter returnable keg, the “ CoolKeg ”, which is not available everywhere, however. The trademark of the products is Jever Castle . In the 1980s, the “Grenzquell Pilsner” brand was produced in the Frisian brewery in Jever; "Wicküler Radler" is currently being produced and bottled there.

Trivia

For the ZDF series Das Erbe der Guldenburgs , which played among other things in the brewery milieu, the Frisian brewery in Jever produced the “Guldenburg beer” of the fictional family brewery. After the success of the series, the Brauhaus zu Jever, which had also supplied the layout for the Guldenburg brewery, sold a beer called "Guldenburg Premium".
