The Oldensworter Vorland is a nature reserve in the Schleswig-Holstein town of Tönning and the municipality of Oldenswort in the North Friesland district .
The approximately 260 hectare nature reserve is registered under number 77 in the directory of nature reserves of the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas. It was expelled at the end of 1993 (date of regulation: December 16, 1993). The nature reserve is also part of the FFH area “Untereider” and the EU bird sanctuary “Ramsar area Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea and adjacent coastal areas”. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of North Friesland.
The nature reserve is located in the Eiderstedter Marsch northeast of Tönning. It covers the area between the dike foot of the Eider dyke and the waters edge of the Eider between the dam of the national road 5 in the south and the local situation of Axendorf in the north and provides the dykes along the northwest coast of the Eider, the river banks and the tidal flats under protection. The protected area is characterized by wet grassland areas in the floodplain area of the Eider and tidal flats.
The foreshore areas were after the construction of the Eider Barrage initially increasingly used for agriculture, making them biologically impoverished. After the designation as a nature reserve, the use was extensive and the grassland rewetted . Today it is only grazed extensively in summer. The nature reserve is an important habitat for numerous meadow birds , waders and water birds . So come here u. a. Teal , gadfly , pintail , teal and shoveler , black- tailed godwit , lapwing , snipe , oystercatcher , redshank and black tern . Also corncrake and the songbirds skylark , yellow wagtail , meadow pipit , sedge warbler and Bluethroat and numerous other species are native here. In the winter half-year barnacle geese and wigeons rest , ruffs can be observed as migratory birds and sandpipers and water striders can also be seen.
In the Oldenworter Vorland there are historical ring troughs in 5 places, which were created at the end of the Middle Ages . These are drinking troughs containing fresh water for the cattle, which are surrounded by walls. These should protect the fresh water from the salt water of the North Sea in the event of flooding. There are only two other ring drinkers on Eiderstedt in the foreland of Westerhever.
The nature reserve is looked after by the Schleswig-Holstein State Association of the Nature Conservation Union of Germany . It can be seen along its entire length from the Eiderdeich. On the edge of the reserve there are information boards with information about the nature reserve.
