North Frisian Wadden Sea; the nature reserve is located between Sylt in the north and the Eiderstedt peninsula in the south.

The North Frisian Wadden Sea is a nature reserve off the Schleswig-Holstein North Sea coast in the district of North Frisia .

The approximately 136,570 hectare nature reserve is registered with the number 86 in the directory of nature reserves of the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas. It was expelled in 1982 (date of regulation: 23 August 1982). In the nature reserve, the former nature reserves "North Frisian Wadden Sea", designated in January 1974, and parts of the nature reserve "Nordspitze Amrum on the island of Amrum in the district of Südtondern", designated in October 1936, have been dissolved. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of North Friesland.

The nature reserve lies almost entirely in the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park and in the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea and Halligen Biosphere Reserve . It is part of the FFH area “National Park Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea and Adjacent Coastal Areas” and the EU bird sanctuary “Ramsar Area Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea and Adjacent Coastal Areas”. In the north it borders, separated by the Hindenburgdamm , on the nature reserve " Wadden Sea north of the Hindenburgdamm ", on Sylt on the nature reserve " Rantumbecken ", " Baakdeel-Rantum / Sylt ", " Rantumer Dünen / Sylt " and " Hörnum-Odde / Sylt "As well as to the landscape conservation areas " Morsum "," Rantum (Sylt) "," Dune and heathland landscape Hörnum on Sylt ", in the west on the island of Amrum to the nature reserve" Nordspitze Amrum on the island Amrum in the district of Südtondern "and the landscape protection area" Amrum " and in the southeast to the nature reserves" Hamburger Hallig "and" Beltringharder Koog "as well as" Wester-Spätinge "on the Eiderstedt peninsula and the landscape conservation areas" Schobüller Berg "and" Dockkoog and Porrenkoog "northwest and west of Husum and the landscape conservation area" Westerhever ”in the northwest of the Eiderstedt peninsula.

The nature reserve extends to the area of the North Frisian Wadden Sea between Sylt in the north and the state protection dike of the Eiderstedt peninsula in the south up to and including the Tümlauer Bucht north of Sankt Peter-Ording . In the east, the state protection dike between the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Lübke-Koog and the mouth of the Husumer Au delimits the nature reserve. The islands and halligen in the North Frisian Wadden Sea and the dams leading to them are excluded from the nature reserve. Most of the nature reserve became part of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park in 1985. Only a 150 meter wide strip in the area of the coastline is not part of the national park.

The nature reserve is by extensive mudflats and sand with numerous Seegatten , lows and creeks dominated. Between the tidal flats are the North Frisian islands and islets and west of Hooge , Pellworm and Süderoog the North Frisian Außensände Japsand , Norderoogsand and Süderoogsand . In the coastal areas there are salt marshes , dunes and beach areas. The nature reserve is a habitat for numerous plant and animal species adapted to the living conditions, including snails , mussels , crabs , shrimps and lugworms . It is also an important habitat for seabirds , waders and water birds , harbor seals and gray seals, as well as numerous fish that spawn here, as well as resting, wintering and moulting areas for many waders and water birds.

Parts of the nature reserve are looked after by the Jordsand Association for the Protection of Sea Birds and Nature , the Nature Conservation Association Wadden Sea , Öömrang Ferian , the Wiedingharde Nature Conservation Association, the Association for Nature Conservation and Landscape Management - Central North Friesland and the Nature Conservation Association Südtondern.
