The nature reserve is looked after by the Schleswig-Holstein State Forests .

The nature reserve, which consists of three areas, is located northeast of Bredstedt . The Bordelumer Heide is east of the Marschbahn , the Langenhorner Heide west of the federal highway 5 . The third sub-area lies between the main road and the railway line and connects the two heather areas in the south. West of Marschbahn that closes to south the conservation area "Stollberg" on.

The nature reserve secures two contiguous heather - forest habitats on an old moraine site. Both sub-areas are primarily occupied by heathland, which is followed by forest and, in some cases, meadow areas. The heather areas are partly sand heather and partly wet heather . There are several ponds and heather ponds in the nature reserve . Several of the ponds were artificially created for fish farming. Of reeds surrounding ponds zones is no longer farmed and serve as habitat for amphibians and dragonflies . The nature reserve is home to the common garlic toad , moor frog , smooth snake as well as great moss damsel and green mosaic damsel.

A circular hiking trail with display boards and an educational path runs through the nature reserve. From the observation deck of on the one kilometer south lying Stollberg stationary transmitter Bredstedt the scenery is good to overlook. The Stollberg nature experience area is directly connected to the “Langenhorner Heide” sub-area.

In October 2013 a large part of the tree population was destroyed by the hurricane "Christian" .
