The Green Island with the Eiderwatt is a nature reserve in the Schleswig-Holstein town of Tönning in the North Friesland district and in the communities of Wesselburenerkoog and Karolinenkoog in the Dithmarschen district .
The nature reserve was designated in 1987 (date of regulation: December 15, 1989). The nature reserve is also part of the FFH area “Untereider” and the EU bird sanctuary “Ramsar area Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea and adjacent coastal areas”. On the opposite side of the Eider , interrupted only by the fairway , is the nature reserve " Dithmarscher Eidvorland mit Watt ". Responsible lower nature conservation authorities are the districts of North Friesland and Dithmarschen.
The nature reserve is located in the Eiderstedter Marsch southwest of Tönning above the Eider Barrage . It places parts of the Green Island (Peinsinsel) and the Katinger Watts under protection. The Green Island is a former island that was created around 1900 in the Eider estuary as a result of the construction of the Kiel Canal . In 1928 it was connected to the mainland by a dam. With the construction of the Eider Barrage in 1973, the island and the tidal flats were largely withdrawn from the natural dynamics of the Wadden Sea . With the construction, a dam (Eiderleitdamm) was also built from the former Lorrendamm, which led from the main dam at Marienhof to Schafsberg, to the new main dike (Eiderdamm) at the Eider Barrage. This dam runs from Schafsberg near Bruchwald, parallel to district road 41, which runs to Schafsberg on the former Lorrendamm, and borders the nature reserve to the west to the former mudflats in the Katinger Vorland . To the north, the nature reserve borders on the former main dike line; to the south, it is bordered by a dirt road just under two kilometers east of the barrage.
The salt meadow , which had been largely drained by the construction of the Eider Barrage and the dam, was the largest connected salt meadow complex on the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein to date. Only in the lower bank areas are the remains of the salt marshes. In order to preserve the former wetland as a habitat and resting place for birds, areas are kept open through sheep grazing and watering measures . The area of the nature reserve, which is located in front of the dam behind the barrage, is an open meadow landscape . It is criss-crossed by numerous ditches and creeks and is still subject to the influence of the tides . The areas between the dam and the road, which are also referred to as zero area because there was no defined development goal for them, are forested in the north. In the south, there are moist meadow areas that are crossed by a former tidal creek. The areas are extensively grazed for care and bird protection. The nature reserve is an important habitat for numerous meadow birds , waders and water birds .
The nature reserve is looked after by the Schleswig-Holstein State Association of the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU). There is an observation tower on the district road south of Marienhof , from which the nature reserve is clearly visible. Large parts can also be seen from the embankment of the county road. There are also information boards at the edge of the protected area.
