The former Fuhlensee is a nature reserve northeast of Meldorf in the Dithmarschen district , Schleswig-Holstein. The area of a former flat lake, the Fuhlensee, in the Miele lowlands is protected . The areas are owned by the Schleswig-Holstein Nature Conservation Foundation and are looked after by the Naturschutzbund Deutschland (NABU).

The silted up marsh lake has characteristic forms of vegetation such as reed beds, wet grassland, and fen and intermoor vegetation. The nature reserve, which offers a habitat for numerous protected species, is part of the European ecological network Natura 2000 .

Through various maintenance measures, a species-rich, poor wetland meadow is preserved in the area of the nature reserve. Here can be found, among other things moor grass meadows , spotted orchid , great burnet and on the Niedermorrbäden leaved heath , heather , forest lousewort , Sundew and Kleinfrüchtige Cranberry . Among the species that can be observed in the nature reserve include sedge warbler , grasshopper warbler , reed bunting , marsh harrier and occasionally Meadow Pipit and short-eared owl . In the trenches of the nature reserve there is also a rare European fish species, the mud whip .

History of origin

With the formation of hooks and spits after the sea bays were constricted, lagoon lakes and later beach lakes were formed, which eventually developed into shallow freshwater lakes after the formation of the "Old Marches" and silted up with few exceptions. The siltation was promoted by drainage measures. The Fuhlensee is said to have had a water surface of 25 hectares in 1855. Today there are only small areas of water that have been artificially created.
