Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea Biosphere Reserve
The Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea and Halligen biosphere reserve (also known as the “Halligen biosphere”) is located between the mouth of the Elbe and the Danish border, has existed since 1990 and corresponds roughly (plus the Halligen ) to the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park .
Recognition as a biosphere reserve added value to the German national park , which had been in existence since 1985 , as it has since been under international nature protection according to the UNESCO program “man and biosphere” . The National Park Administration in Tönning in cooperation with the Pellworm Office , for which the Biosphere Office was set up, is responsible for the care and national affairs of the biosphere reserve .
On February 3, 2005, the Wadden Sea on the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein was designated by UNESCO as the "Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea and Halligen Biosphere Reserve". As a result, the biosphere reserve, which has existed since 1990, has changed considerably: It was adapted to the boundaries of the national park, which was amended and enlarged in 1999, and a so-called development zone was added. In total, there is now 4,431 square kilometers of biosphere with three zones:
- The core zone of the biosphere reserve is 1,570 square kilometers and coincides with zone 1 of the national park, in which nature comes first.
- A 2,840 square kilometer buffer zone, which corresponds to Zone 2 of the National Park, allows limited economic use within the meaning of the National Park Act.
- The newly defined development zone comprises the inhabited Hallig Langeneß , Oland , Gröde , Nordstrandischmoor and Hooge and is 21 square kilometers in size. It is managed sustainably here. The residents of the Hallig refer to their habitat as the “Biosphere Halligen” and are involved in various projects in the field of sustainability.
