from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the area of the Bavarian Forest should Bavarian Forest and Bavarian Forest National Park together the concept of a biosphere reserve fulfilled. Only part of the national park, an area around Rachel and Lusen, has been formally recognized as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO . Together with the National Park and Biosphere Reserve Šumava (Bohemian Forest) in the Czech Republic , they formed the “Green Roof of Europe”.

The protected area no longer has the status of a biosphere reserve since 2007, as it was not possible to designate a development zone for the Bavarian Forest due to considerable resistance from the population.
