The Kudensee is 38.9 hectares is the largest lake in Dithmarschen . Since 1935 it has been under nature protection with its surroundings; Since the last redefinition in 1992, the nature reserve covers an area of 246 hectares. The Kudensee is the last shallow water lake in the Elbmarschen . As an FFH area and European bird sanctuary , it is also protected internationally.

The area has larger areas of reed beds , remains of broken forest and willow bushes , the entire three-kilometer-long bank is overgrown. The bittern breeds here, it is a resting place for numerous migratory birds. With a maximum depth of only 1.2 meters, the lake is hypertrophic , due to the strong mixing by the wind, the temperature and oxygen conditions from the surface to the bottom are almost the same, which can only be unfavorable for fish when the ice cover is closed. The bottom consists of both soft mud and hard sand.

The Ministry of Agriculture found a total of 14 species of fish in the lake in 2006. It found bream , gustern , roach , perch and ruff very frequently . Eels hide in the entire bank area during the day . Pike and pikeperch were found among predatory fish, bleak and mildew were also found in large numbers . The species proof was successful for gudgeon , rudd , tench and loach . The only fish that still manages to migrate through the barriers to the Kiel Canal is the eel, which also suffers losses at unknown heights on the way. Formerly occurring species such as smelt , aland and feint used to be rare, since the construction of the drainage structures they have not occurred at all.

The lake belongs to the Dithmarschen district and the Schleswig-Holstein Nature Conservation Foundation . It is located on the grounds of the parishes of Kuden and Averlak .
