The Leibniz Institute for Polymer Research Dresden eV was founded in 1992 from the Institute for Polymer Technology of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR (ITP) and is today one of the largest polymer research institutions in Germany. It is a member of the Leibniz Association .

The application-oriented basic research at the IPF aims to develop the scientific basis for improving or developing new polymer materials and technologies. The material interfaces are a specific starting point: the properties of polymer materials and composite materials should be controlled by designing suitable interfaces .

history

On October 1, 1948, a textile research institute was founded at the Mitteldeutsche Spinnhütte Pirna- Copitz , which under its director Walter Frenzel expanded into a university institute of the TH Dresden , accepted as an institute for fiber technology in the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin and followed in 1954 Dresden was resettled.

On April 1, 1984 it was named Institute for Polymer Technology , from which the Institute for Polymer Research Dresden was finally spun off in 1992 . It has been operating as the Leibniz Institute since 2004. In 1995, together with the TU Dresden, the institute hosted the 37th Annual General Meeting of the Colloid Society in the Gerhart Potthoff Building in Dresden.

The profile of research at the IPF is determined by four strategic themes:

  • Functional nanostructured interfaces and polymer systems
  • Biology-inspired interface and material design
  • Polymer networks: structure, theory and application
  • Process-controlled structure formation of polymer materials

The institute works closely with the Technical University of Dresden (TU Dresden), is a member of DRESDEN-concept and the Dresden Materials Research Association, and cooperates in numerous research projects with institutes and industrial companies in Germany and worldwide.

In 2002, together with the TU Dresden, the IPF founded the Max Bergmann Center for Biomaterials in a specially constructed building. Scientists from both institutions use synergies from close interdisciplinary and cross-institutional cooperation for internationally successful work in the new, transdisciplinary research field of molecular bioengineering.
