On a terminal moraine in the so-called Dithmarscher Switzerland

The Heide-Itzehoer Geest is a sub-natural area in western Schleswig-Holstein . It belongs to the Hohe Geest and thus to the Schleswig-Holstein Geest areas .

The Heide-Itzehoer Geest was postponed in the Saale Ice Age and is one of the geologically oldest areas in the country. The area lies south of the Eider-Treene lowland , east of the Dithmarscher Marsch and Wilstermarsch , north of the Elbmarschen and west of the Vorgeest . Particularly to the west it is clearly delimited, in long parts along the former coastline clear cliffs ( Kleve ) can still be seen. The southernmost part is the Münsterdorfer Geestinsel , located south of the Stör and north of the Kremper Marsch .

The Geest lies in particular in today's districts of Dithmarschen and Steinburg . It is cut through by the Kiel Canal , for the construction of which a lowland between Dithmarscher Geest in the north and Hohenwestedter Geest in the south was used.

For an old moraine landscape, the Heide-Itzehoer Geest has relatively large height differences. At almost 80 meters above sea level, the Heide-Itzehoer Geest is also the highest point on the west coast of the country. The soils are rather unsuitable for agriculture ( number of fields between 26 and 35 on a scale of 100).
