John A. North

John A. North (born May 5, 1938 ) is an English ancient historian and professor emeritus at University College London .

North studied at Queen's College , Oxford , and received her doctorate there with a dissertation on the relationship between politics and religion in Republican Rome. North then taught at University College London for 40 years . There he was Head of the Department of History from 1992 to 1997 and from 2000 to 2002. In 2003 he was made an Honorary Fellow of the University College and Emeritus Professor of History. He has headed the Institute of Classical Studies since 2012 .

His research focus is the religious history of Rome and the Roman Empire . After his retirement, North is involved in the Festus Lexicon Project , which aims to process the information in the lexicon De verborum significatu of the Sextus Pompeius Festus for research into the history of the Roman Republic. North is also co-author of a University College London story entitled The World of UCL with Negley Harte .
