Simon RF Price

Simon Rowland Francis Price (born September 27, 1954 in London , † June 14, 2011 in Oxford ) was a British ancient historian and Fellow of Lady Margaret Hall , University of Oxford .

Price, son of the Anglican Bishop Stuart Hetley Price (1922-1977), studied after attending the Manchester Grammar School at Queen's College , Oxford, where he received his BA and DPhil. His supervisor for the DPhil was John A. North at University College London . After that, he was initially the WHD Rouse Research Fellow at Christ's College of the University of Cambridge . Since 1981 he has been a Fellow of Lady Margaret Hall , Oxford.

Price was an internationally respected specialist in Hellenistic and Roman Asia Minor, as well as the history of the ancient Greek and Roman religions , especially the interaction of religious traditions in the imperial era (including Judaism and Christianity ), the imperial cult, and other ruler cults . In particular, his monograph on the Roman imperial cult in Asia Minor, published in 1984, provided research with important impulses. Most recently Price was also involved in the archaeological prospecting of the Sphakia in southwest Crete by his wife Lucia Nixon, Jennifer Moody and Oliver Rackham. In 2007 he was diagnosed with a rare cancer disease that forced him to give up teaching in 2008. He remained scientifically active until the end.
