Henry Francis Pelham

Henry Francis Pelham (born September 19, 1846 in Bergh Apton , Norfolk , † February 12, 1907 ) was a British ancient historian .

Henry Francis Pelham was the grandson of 2nd Earl of Chichester Thomas Pelham and son of John Thomas Pelham , who was Bishop of Norwich from 1857 to 1893 . Pelham received his education at Harrow School and Trinity College . In 1873 he married Laura Priscilla Buxton, the daughter of Sir Edward North Buxton . The marriage resulted in two daughters and three sons (including Sir Edward Henry Pelham ). At Exeter College he worked as an ancient history tutor and teacher. In 1887, Pelham became a Reader in Ancient History. In 1889 he became Camden Professor of Ancient History at Oxford University and remained so until his death in 1907. In 1890 he became a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries . In 1895 he published an article on the Roman Frontier System . From 1897 until his death he was President of Trinity College, Oxford. In 1902 he became a Fellow of the British Academy . For the Encyclopædia Britannica he wrote the article on Roman history . His publication activity limited a cataract disease .
