Henry Stuart Jones
Sir Henry Stuart Jones (born May 15, 1867 in Hunslet near Leeds , † June 29, 1939 in Tenby ) was a British classical philologist and historian.
Live and act
Jones was a fellow at the British School at Athens , was later director of the British School at Rome and finally 1920-27 Camden Professor of Ancient History at Trinity College of Oxford University . In 1927 he followed a call to the University of Wales, Aberystwyth , where he learned Welsh . In Wales he also worked a. a. for the National Library of Wales and was Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Wales in 1929 and 1930 . He was a Life Member of the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies . In 1915 he was elected a member ( Fellow ) of the British Academy .
In 1911 he took over the revision of the Greek-English Lexicon by Henry George Liddell and Robert Scott together with Roderick McKenzie . They issued a provisional 9th edition in 1925; the completely revised version did not appear until after Jones' death (1940).
