The Uruguay Athletic Club , or Uruguay Athletic for short, also known as American , was a football club from Montevideo in Uruguay .

history

The club, whose club colors were black and brown, was founded on August 10, 1898. He was of English origin and came from the Montevidean Barrio Punta Carretas , where he played his home games on the former field of the Albion Football Club . This sports field ( Cancha de Punta Carretas ) was located near the current shopping center Punta Carretas Shopping at the location of the Iglesia Sagrado Corazón . Together with the Albion Football Club, the club German football club and the Central Uruguay Railway Cricket Club - precursor Association of Peñarol - belonged to the Uruguay Athletic Club to the clubs on March 30, 1900 the first as The Uruguay Association Football League named , later founded in Asociación Uruguaya de Fútbol renamed Uruguayan Football Association.

The club's football team was, like the teams of the clubs involved in the formation of the association, a founding member of the Uruguayan Primera División, which was composed of four teams in its first season in 1900 . Uruguay Athletic belonged to the top division for the first four years of its existence. Tied on points with the bottom German in the table, the 1900 season was finished third in the table. Only one game could be won. 1901 finished Uruguay Athletic again in third place in the table. After the end of the 1902 season, the club's team took fourth place in the league, which has now grown to six participants. In 1903 they finished seventh and thus last. In that year, the club's membership of the Primera División ended, as it was no longer represented in the field of participants in the 1905 season after the civil war-related non-staging of the competition in 1904. Although it is sometimes reported that the club was active in the seasons 1905 and 1906 under the name Sport Club Teutonia in the Primera División and after another renaming from 1907 to 1909 as Club Atlético Montevideo . However, this contradicts sources that describe the Sport Club Teutonia as the successor to the German Football Club.
