The port of Montevideo is the main commercial port in Uruguay .

It is located on the Río de la Plata in the Bay of Montevideo on the northern side of the peninsula on which the Ciudad Vieja is located. He played an important role in the history of the city of Montevideo and the state of Uruguay. This is due to its importance as an economic center due to the export-oriented agriculture, as well as the supply of the trapped in the context of the siege of Montevideo during the Guerra Grande .

History of the port

After a new pier was built in 1824, the increasing draft of the ships meant that it was no longer possible to moor on it. Thus, from around 1840 both the loading and unloading of the ship's cargo was accomplished by reaching the ships anchored in the Bay of Montevideo via carts fitted with high wheels, which carried the cargo to the customs office in calle Zabala . Sooner or later, however, a redesign of the port was inevitable.

Redesign of the port from 1901

A long planning phase preceded the expansion of the port between 1901 and 1909.

From the expansion of the port, originally established by law in 1856, to the laying of the foundation stone on July 18, 1901, construction was delayed by the financial difficulties that occurred as a result of the political unrest in and after the Guerra Grande , including the high national debt.

After initial proposals for expansion from a British company in the period from 1873 to 1875, a Brunswick company finally decided in 1896 in the international port design competition announced in 1889. The construction activity itself was then started by a French company in 1901. In the port area, for the area of which 60 hectares of earth were heaped up, next to a dam protecting the port facility, a breakwater each 940 and 1300 meters in length was built. A 2.5 kilometer long pier with dredging for access to the Río de la Plata , an outer port and two 7.5 meter deep harbor basins were also part of the construction work.

The fully state-financed port was not completed until 1909, but it was at least partially used from 1904 onwards. The port was administered by the state Administración Nacional del Puerto Montevideo, founded in 1916 . Since 1933, the administration has been the responsibility of the Administración Nacional de Puertos (ANP), which is centrally responsible for all ports in Uruguay .

Current situation

Wrecks in the port of Montevideo (2016)

Even today, the port of Montevideo remains the country's most important overseas port. In 2010, 9,178,327 tons of goods were handled in the port of Montevideo. In addition to handling goods, it is also used for passenger shipping. The most important ferry connection here is the passenger transfer by the BUQUEBUS ferries between Montevideo and Buenos Aires. In 1997, 741,999 people used this ferry connection via the port of Montevideo. However, this number had declined by 2001, when 470,788 ship travelers traveled on this route. In 2010, 466,293 passengers used the ferry services in the port of Montevideo.

There are numerous trailers and wrecks in the port , mostly from fishing vessels.

Container port

In 2010, 671,952 standard containers ( TEU ) were handled in the port of Montevideo . Thus, the container throughput in 2010 was almost back to the level before the financial crisis of 2007 with 675,273 standard containers.
