Günter Mertins

Günter Mertins (born June 20, 1936 in Mülheim an der Ruhr ; † March 16, 2015 ) was a German geographer and university professor at the University of Marburg in the field of cultural geography .

Life

From 1955 Mertins studied geography, history, geology, pedagogy and sports science at the universities in Gießen and Cologne as well as at the Cologne Sports University . In 1958 he passed the examination to become a certified sports teacher at the latter university. As such, he worked at the State High School in Mülheim-Ruhr from 1960 to 1962. In 1964 Mertins did his doctorate with Harald Uhlig at the University of Giessen and subsequently worked for four years as a research assistant at the Geography Institute of the Justus Liebig University. In the meantime he passed the grammar school teaching examination in 1965 in the subjects geography, history, political science and sport. Between 1968 and 1970 he worked in the branch of the Tropical Institute of the Justus Liebig University at the Instituto Colombo-Alemán de Investigaciones Científicas in Santa Marta ( Colombia ) as a research assistant and deputy local director. From 1970 to 1972 he worked again as a scientific assistant at the Geographical Institute in Gießen. In 1973 he completed his habilitation. He was appointed professor of cultural geography at the University of Marburg , where he was dean of the geography department several times.

Focus

In his work he dealt with urbanization and migration processes . Regionally, his focus was on the countries of Latin America .
