Gilberto Oliveira Souza Júnior , also called Gilberto , (born June 5, 1989 in Piranhas ) is a Brazilian football player . He is used in the position of a striker .

Career

Gilberto started among other things in the youth division of Santa Cruz FC . Here he made the leap into the professional squad in 2009. For the 2010 season he was loaned to Vera Cruz FC . With this he played 18 games in the state championship of Pernambuco and scored twelve goals.

After the state championship in 2011, the change from Gilberto to Internacional Porto Alegre became known. A simultaneous offer from Corinthians São Paulo turned down the Santa Cruz because Internacional paid a 50% higher transfer fee. The contract had a term of three years. He made 13 of 38 possible appearances (one goal) in the 2011 Série A. In the 2012 season Gilberto started with Internacional in the national championship and made his debut at international club level. In the 2012 Copa Libertadores in the third group match at home Internacional met The Strongest . In the game Gilberto was substituted on in the 77th minute. In the second leg against the club Gilberto scored his first goal on the plane. After he was not in the squad on the first match day of the 2012 championship , he ran from second to fourth in the starting lineup. Matchday five to seven he only came from the bench to use. He was then loaned out for the remainder of the championship.

He came to the league competitor Sport Recife . For sport he started in all 31 remaining games of the season, including 19 in the starting line-up, and scored eight goals. After the championship ended, Gilberto returned to Internacional.

The 2013 went like the previous season. Gilberto played the national championship for Internacional and started in championship 2013 with the club. Shortly after the competition began, he was loaned out again. He came to Portuguesa . At the end of the season Gilberto left the club and country.

He signed a contract in Canada with Toronto FC . According to the general manager, Gilberto also had offers from Mexico , Germany and other countries. The transfer fee was three million Canadian dollars. In his first season at the club, he scored the best goal in 2014 .

In February 2015 Gilberto left Toronto for home. He was loaned to the CR Vasco da Gama in Rio de Janeiro until the end of the year . With the club Gilberto was able to win the state championship in Rio de Janeiro in 2015. Gilberto also played regularly in the 2015 championship , mostly in the starting line-up. This changed with the arrival of the new trainer Celso Roth . In this he played from then on only a minor role, whereupon he left the club in July of that year.

Gilberto not only left the club, but also the country. Because of his experience in Toronto, he got a new contract with Chicago Fire (MLS) . In his ten games remaining in Major League Soccer 2015 , he scored five goals, including two in a game against his old club from Toronto . Two months after the start of the MLS 2016 , Gilberto's next loan deal was underway.

It went back to Brazil. Gilberto accepted an offer from São Paulo FC . The contract had a term until the end of 2017. Gilberto essentially acted as a reserve player at the club. Across all competitions he started 14 times in 52 games and scored a total of 15 goals. He stayed with the club until the end of his contract.

At the end of January 2018, Turkish club Yeni Malatyaspor announced that they had signed Gilberto. After the conclusion of the Süper Lig 2017/18 Gilberto left the club. He signed a new contract with EC Bahia . With the club he won the Bahia National Championship in 2019 and was top scorer in the Copa do Nordeste 2019.
