Luis Hernández , with full name Luis Hernández Rodríguez (born April 14, 1989 in Madrid ), is a Spanish football player on the position of a defender who is mainly used as a central defender . In April 2016, Leicester City , at the time leaders of the English first class , announced the signing of the central defender, who will become free on July 1, 2016.

Club career

Career start at Real Madrid

Luis Hernández was born on April 14, 1989 in the Spanish capital Madrid, where he began his club career in 1998 with the major club Real Madrid , whose first team under Jupp Heynckes just won the Champions League . At Real Madrid, he went through all youth leagues before he was used for the first time in the C-team of Real Madrid with play in the fourth-class Spanish Tercera División . He was in Real Madrid's third team until 2010, but was used for the first time a year earlier at Real Madrid Castilla in Segunda División B , the third-highest Spanish football league. After he was represented with the B-team in the middle of the table, but in the upper half of the table, he ranked with the team at the end of the 2010/11 season with the team behind CD Guadalajara (2nd) and CD Lugo (1st) in third place Group 1, one of four groups in the Spanish third division. In the subsequent promotion play-offs, however, the team was eliminated in the first round against the CD Alcoyano with a total score of 2: 4 from two-way leg and thus remained in the Segunda División B. Following this season was he was courted by various European clubs, where he was also associated with the Belgian first division club KAA Gent , but a contract was not concluded.

Transfer to Sporting Gijón

After he was out of a club in July 2011, he joined the Sporting Gijón B team after a successful trial training session in January 2012 , signing a contract with a term of 18 months and initially only to be used in the B team. The contract also included an option for a further three years. In the 2010/11 season Luis Hernández brought it to ten league appearances in the Segunda División B, in which he himself remained goalless and finished the season with the team in tenth place in the group 1, while his former team from Madrid as champions and Play-off winners were promoted to the next higher division. Due to his performance in the B team, his contract was extended and he was included in the professional squad. His use in the season opening game on August 26, 2012 should be his only one this season, as well as his last for the B-team. On September 2, 2012, Luis Hernández made his professional debut when he was in the third round match of the Segunda División 2012/13 against Racing Santander , a 0-0 away draw, over the full game on the lawn. During this time he was often used as a right defender and less often as a central defender . The game took place in a mourning ribbon and in memory of Gijón's record coach Manuel Preciado , who died of a heart attack on June 7, 2014 at the age of 54 and who previously looked after both clubs for a long time.

Under Manolo Sánchez Murias , who held the coaching post until mid-October 2012, and under his successor José Ramón Sandoval , the defender came to his missions in the Spanish second division , where he was mostly on the field for the full 90 minutes. However, his stakes decreased from the beginning of March 2013, after he contributed one assist in four consecutive league games, but received a yellow card in four consecutive games . After that, Sandoval used him in only five more championship games until the end of the season in early June 2013, the rest of the time Luis Hernández was mostly on the bench or not even in the official squad. At the end of the season he ranked with the traditional club Sporting Gijón , relegated only a year earlier, in tenth place in the table of the second highest Spanish football league and by then had made 21 league appearances and four assists. He was also used in an encounter of the Copa del Rey 2012/13 when the team was eliminated from the current tournament in the round of sixteen against CA Osasuna .

From the 2013/14 season , he developed into a regular player in the central defense of the Asturians , especially at the side of the Colombian- born Bernardo Espinosa , where he then often switched between the central defender position and that of the right-back. In the latter position, he often alternated with Alberto Lora , who mostly advanced or, in the early stages of the season, also led the team in three games as captain and left full-back. After he was still unused on the bench in the first two games of the season, Sandoval put him on as a regular in the defense line of the professional club from the third round. With the exception of three appearances between the end of September and mid-October 2013 and the 3-1 victory over FC Girona on March 23, 2014, when he had to serve a yellow card suspension, he was a regular player and made 36 league appearances by the end of the season in which he scored one goal and prepared another for his teammates. He scored his first goal in professional football on November 24, 2013 in a 3-1 away win over CD Lugo. Fifth place in regular time, he took part with Sporting Gijón in the final play-offs, where he was eliminated with the team after two missions in the semifinals against the UD Las Palmas . As in the previous year, the Asturians were suddenly eliminated in the Copa del Rey 2013/14 when the team was eliminated from the current tournament in the second main round against league rivals Recreativo Huelva .

Second division runner-up and promotion to the Primera División

From 2014/15 Luis Hernández was used under the now coach Abelardo Fernández as a core member in central defense on the side of Bernardo Espinosa. At the end of the season, together with Espinosa, he was able to record the most playing minutes after both players played through 41 of the 42 possible league games over the full length of the game and only missed one game due to yellow card suspensions. While Espinosa was the attacking strength of the two with three goals and five assists, Luis Hernández managed no goals, but four assists. At the end of the season, he and Sporting Gijón were two points behind Betis Sevilla, who had just moved up from the third division, in second place in the table. Associated with this was direct promotion to the highest league in Spanish football . The team, which suffered only two defeats in 42 games, only just managed to get promoted with a goal difference that was two goals higher and therefore did not have to play in the play-offs. In the Copa del Rey 2014/15 there was again only one mission for him; with his club he was eliminated again in the second main round, this time against Real Valladolid .

The 27-year-old central defender then made his first division debut in the first round match against his training club Real Madrid on 23 August 2015, when he played the full 90 minutes in the 0-0 home draw. Even after that, Abelardo Fernández used him in his original position, but let him appear as a right defender for a few games. On February 27, 2016, he led the team in the 2-4 home defeat against Espanyol Barcelona for the first time as team captain and took over the loop of the actual captain Alberto Lora, who only had a short stint as a noble joker in this game. So far (as of April 18, 2016), although he was not in the squad in two games, he was able to record the most playing minutes of his team in 2015/16 and is ahead of left winger Jonathan Rodríguez Menéndez and goalkeeper Iván Cuéllar . With the team he ranks 18th in the table and thus on a relegation place. During the current season, Leicester City , at the time leaders of the English first class , announced the signing of the central defender, who will become free on July 1, 2016 , in April 2016 .
