Career as a soccer player

After he had become eligible to play for the men's division, he played in the second team of FC Carl Zeiss in the second-rate GDR league from 1968 . For his first appearance in the league team Struppert came on the 25th match day of the 1970/71 season, June 12, 1971. In the match between Chemie Leipzig and FC Carl Zeiss (0: 1), the 1.77 m tall Struppert was not replaced Ready for action Dieter Scheitler called up as a left winger. On the following day, Struppert also played in the upper league, this time in midfield. For the 1971/72 season he was officially nominated for the league team as a striker. However, he could not assert himself in the team against his strikers Peter Ducke , Eberhard Vogel and Dieter Scheitler and was only used in three league games, each only as a substitute. He also played one game each in the UEFA and GDR Cup. Also in 1972/73 he only came to three league appearances, only once did he play a game over the full season. In 1973/74 he was used in the league games of the 6th and 12th match day and was in a UEFA Cup game. At the end of the season he was delegated to FC Carl Zeiss Jena. Within four seasons he had only played thirteen competitive games: 10 times in the major league, two UEFA Cup games and one GDR Cup appearance. He scored his three competitive goals in the league games.

From the 1974/75 season Struppert played for the BSG Wismut Gera in the GDR league, where he developed into a regular player. In his first season in Gera, he was the top scorer in his league season with twelve goals. In 1977 the team was promoted to the league, Struppert was involved with 13 point games and five goals. With Wismut Gera he played his fifth league season in 1977/78. He completed 22 point games and scored one goal. He always played in attack, but was only a substitute in numerous encounters. Bismut could only stay in the big league for one season. In the GDR league, Struppert played with the Gera team until the end of the 1979/80 season, after which he ended his career as a football player.
