Roland Gumtz

Roland Gumtz (born November 3, 1958 ) is a former German soccer player who played for BSG Stahl Brandenburg in the GDR upper league from 1984 to 1990 .

Athletic career

Gumtz came in 1980 from the third-class district division ASG Vorwärts Havelberg to the company sports club Stahl Brandenburg, which was represented in the second-class GDR league at that time . In 1983 and 1984 he won the season with the Brandenburg team. After BSG Stahl had failed in the promotion round in 1983, a year later it was promoted to the Oberliga, the highest league in GDR football . In the first league season, the 1.73 m tall Gumtz was part of the regular team with 24 appearances in a total of 26 point games and played mainly in the left midfield. He scored his first league goal on March 16, 1985 in the match on the 18th matchday between Stahl Brandenburg and FC Karl-Marx-Stadt (2-0). In the following seasons Gumtz maintained his regular place as a midfielder in the top division team of BSG Stahl. In 1986 he experienced a high point in his career when he played four UEFA Cup matches . Brandenburg had qualified for this competition with fifth place in the major league, survived the 1st round against the Northern Irish club Coleraine FC (1: 1 1: 0), but lost 0.2 in the 2nd round against the Swedish representative IFK Göteborg and 1: 1 off. From the 1987/88 season, Gumtz Oberliga inserts decreased due to injury, but he was still able to play the majority of the point games. In the seasons 1989/90 and 1990/91 ( BSV Stahl ) he was no longer part of the regular squad and only played ten or eight point games. In the summer of 1991 he left Brandenburg after 123 first division points (five goals) and joined the third division club FC Stahl Hennigsdorf , where he finally ended his footballing career.
