Harald Schütze (born September 30, 1948 ) is a former soccer player who played in the GDR major league for the Berlin FC Dynamo .

Football career

Junior national team

At the age of 17, Schütze, who had started his football career at BSG Motor Oschersleben , moved into the international spotlight. On March 27, 1966, he played for the first time in an international match of the GDR junior team, where he, as the left midfield director, together with the later successful national players Jürgen Sparwasser and Frank Ganzera, achieved a 0-0 win at the Polish juniors. He also played all three preliminary round matches of the 1967 UEFA youth tournament in Turkey. With only one victory, the GDR juniors were eliminated from the competition early. Schütze played a total of nine games with the GDR junior national team. Between 1967 and 1972, Schütze also played nine international matches with the young national team.

Berlin FC Dynamo

A year later, Schütze was used in the second half of the league season 1966/67 in the league team of his home club BFC Dynamo. The young attacking and midfielder completed three missions in his first league season. Behind regulars like Joachim Hall , Hermann Bley and Lothar Paul , it was difficult for Schützen to make regular appearances. At the end of the season, the club was relegated penultimate. In the 1967/68 season, the BFC aimed for immediate resurgence in the second-rate GDR league . This was achieved by the capital city club, and the 19-year-old shooter rose with the team back to the top division. In the meantime, Schütze moved up to striker number 3 behind Rainer Geserich and Peter Lyszcan and should develop into one of the pillars of the team in the following years. In the first season after being promoted again he played all 26 point games and was the second best scorer of his team behind Manfred Becker with four hits. In the following year, coach Hans Geitel decided more and more to pull the attacker back into midfield. In the league, the BFC established itself better and better in the following time. Although the club did not yet play a significant role in the league game, it reached the final of the GDR soccer cup at the end of the 1970/71 season . Against the newly crowned champions Dynamo Dresden , the Berliners could keep up for a long time and only lost 1: 2 in extra time. Schütze was called up as a right midfielder, but was replaced shortly after the Berlin equalizer in the 73rd minute. Despite the defeat, the Berliners had qualified for the European competition Cup Winners' Cup. There the team met Cardiff City from Wales in the first round . After Cardiff looked like the winner in the first leg up to the 90th minute, Schütze was able to equalize to 1: 1. Since the second leg also ended 1-1, the penalty shoot-out had to decide. Schütze was already substituted for Ralf Schulenberg in extra time and could no longer compete. Dynamo made it to the semi-finals, but were eliminated by Dynamo Moscow . Schütze played in all games of the tournament from the start and scored two goals. By finishing second in the 1971/72 season, BFC Dynamo qualified for the 1972/73 UEFA Cup . Here, too, Schütze played all six games with his team before they were eliminated by Liverpool . After the first leg against Angers SCO ended 1: 1 in the first round of this competition and it was 1: 1 in the second leg until the 55th minute, Schütze was able to win the game with his first UEFA Cup goal for a 2-1 lead the Berliners decide. Also in the 1975/76 season Schütze was runner-up with the BFC again, but had only completed 13 league matches. In the 1976/77 season, Schütze was only used in the first half of the series in ten league point games, after which he surprisingly announced his retirement at the age of almost 28. In his ten league years he had played 183 point games at BFC Dynamo, scoring 23 goals. He was used 15 times in Berlin's European Cup matches and contributed three goals.

A national team

In his second league season 1968/69, Schütze recommended himself again for international tasks with consistently good performances. So he moved up to the squad of the senior national team , which was preparing for the final battle for qualification for the 1970 World Cup. In preparation for the decisive games against Wales and Italy, national coach Harald Seeger tested several young players in the summer of 1969, including Schütze, who received his probation chance on July 9, 1969 in the game against Egypt. Although the GDR national team clearly won 7-0, Schütze was a weak point in the team with his hesitant game, so he was not considered in the A selection.

Private life

After retiring from football, Schütze later returned to the sporting field. After German reunification, he went into business for himself and opened his own sports hall in Berlin-Hohenschönhausen. A few years later he moved to Cologne.
