Athletic career

Before Lothar Paul started his career in high-class football at the company sports association (BSG) Chemie Zeitz in the second-class GDR league in 1965/66, he had previously played in the fourth-class Halle district class for the BSG activist in Großgrimma . In his first GDR league season, he immediately earned a regular place in the chemistry team, of the 30 point games played, he played 24 games and was also the team's top scorer with eleven goals. Between 1966 and 1967 played in the major league for the East Berlin police club BFC Dynamo. There, the striker Erhard Kochale was out long-term, and Paul took over his position for ten point games, with one goal. The BFC was relegated after the end of the season. After Paul had played one more game in the GDR league for the Berlin team, he returned to Chemie Zeitz, where he played seventeen point games in the GDR league season 1967/68 and was successful with five goals. 1968/69 he was with 28 appearances in 30 league games and another five goals an important active post of the Zeitzer, which however had to relegate to the district league. Paul moved to the district division structure Schwedt , where he stayed for a season. For the 1970/71 season he returned to the league, where he joined the BSG Stahl Riesa . With 24 games in the league and six goals he established himself as a regular player, but then suffered relegation for the third time. The Riesaers immediately returned to the league, where Paul played a major role as the top scorer of the Riesaer with 21 stakes (out of 22), participation in all eight promotion round games and a total of 16 goals. Apart from a few injury-related dropouts, Paul was also able to assert himself in the Riesa attack line in the following two league seasons, of the 52 games he played in 36 games, but only scored five goals. For the 1975/76 season Paul made another change and now played for the league promoted chemistry Leipzig. There he was used in 23 point games both in attack and in midfield, scored two goals and experienced relegation again. It took three years before Leipzig managed to return to the league. During this time Paul remained a regular player and played 64 of the 66 GDR league games. In each season, the Leipzig reached the league promotion round. While Paul was not there in 1976/77, he was used in all eight games in 1977/78 and 1978/79. In 1979/80 Chemie Leipzig played again in the top league, for the 33-year-old Paul it was the last season in high-class football. As a midfielder, he was used again in 24 league games, and he scored his last three goals. Lothar Paul ended his career with another relegation. In his thirteen seasons in the upper and GDR leagues, he had made 130 league games in which he scored 20 goals. In the GDR league he was used 155 times and scored 47 goals.
