Erich Ott (born December 3, 1944 in Oberammergau ) is a German sculptor and medalist . Along with Heinz Hoyer, he is one of the most famous coin designers in Germany and bears his initials Πas a monogram .

Life

From 1959 to 1963 Erich Ott attended the technical school for wood carving in Oberammergau and then studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich , where he was a student of Josef Henselmann and Hans Ladner . Since graduating in 1969, he has lived and worked as a freelance sculptor in Munich with a studio in the Maxvorstadt district . Since it was founded in 1988, Erich Ott has been a member of the Munich Medalists Association , an association of experienced medalists.

For the first time he took part in an official coin competition in 1972, in which he took 3rd place. The first coin he designed and then minted was the 5 DM commemorative coin for the 200th birthday of Carl Friedrich Gauß. Further commemorative coins of the Federal Republic of Germany in D-Mark followed. In 1990 he designed the 2 DM course coin with the portrait of Franz Josef Strauss . Even after the introduction of the euro, Erich Ott designed some commemorative coins, including the value side of the German 100 euro commemorative coin for the "Soccer World Cup 2006" and the 2-euro commemorative coin "Hamburg" from the 2008 federal series. December 2008 he won the coin competition for the 2-euro commemorative coin "Bavaria" of the federal state series, which was released in 2012.

Furthermore, Ott designs and produces medals that can be seen, for example, in exhibitions at the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden or the Staatliche Münzsammlung München .
