Artist group of medalists Munich

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The artists 'group of medalists in Munich , at times also referred to as the artists' group of medalists , is an artist group of medalists of contemporary art founded in Munich in the 1980s , which, among other things, regularly develops time-critical medals on fixed topics.

history

The artist circle, initially under the name of artistic circle of Medalists Munich , was formed in 1988 at the suggestion of the graphic artist and engraver Reinhart Heinsdorff in collaboration with the then principal curator of the National Coin Collection Munich , Ingrid Szeiklies-Weber . The aim of the initiative was to “raise the medal to a new level of artistic design”. First of all, active artists came together in Munich, mostly sculptors and medalists who were already experienced in competitions, who then created individually designed “ high quality embossed medals ”. Using the medal as a medium, they explored issues above all on the areas of tension “between two- and three-dimensionality and the regulating power of the medal format for content presentation” and thereby initially made a special contribution to Munich's medal art of the century.

As a result of German reunification , artists from the former German Democratic Republic joined the initially localized group of artists at the instigation of the Münzkabinett Berlin and the State Mint in Munich . The topic of “reunification” gave rise to the impetus for editions that have changed every year since then . Instead of the previously minted medals, cast medals were now used , in the period from 1991 to 2005, for example, under titles such as “New Beginning, We - Portrait Medals, Area and Space, Winged Words, Order / Chaos, Europe, Weimar 1999, Mein München, Der Maler Lenbach Schrobenhausen ”as well as numerous others. In addition, in 1994 a joint project called the Tower of Babel was launched .

On the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the artist group, extensive retrospectives were shown in the coin cabinet of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden and in Schrobenhausen in 2003 and 2004 , including commemorative coins from the oeuvre of the artist group realized by the Deutsche Bundesbank . The exhibitions were accompanied by a catalog published in 2003 as part of the series Die Kunstmedaille in Deutschland under the title Der Künstlerkreis der Medailleure München , in which the works of the participating artists were presented extensively and with essays , especially the Munich contributions to medal art in the 20th century.
