Hans Friedrich Geitel (born July 16, 1855 in Braunschweig , † August 15, 1923 in Wolfenbüttel ) was a German physicist .

Life

Hans Geitel came to Blankenburg in 1861 when his family moved, his father was a forester , and grew up there in the immediate vicinity of Julius Elster . He attended school and high school together with Elster. A lifelong friendship developed between them, and their own interest in the natural sciences resulted in a common field of activity.

Both years of study were spent in Heidelberg and Berlin . In 1879 Geitel passed his teaching examination in Braunschweig and took up a position as a teacher in Wolfenbüttel at the large school . In 1881 Geitel succeeded in bringing Julius Elster to the grammar school as well. There they intensified their joint research. Karl Bergwitz (1875–1958), who continued both studies, was one of her students there. In 1892 Geitel was elected a member of the Leopoldina . In 1921 he was elected a foreign member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences .

Act

Geitel and Elster presented papers on meteorology , atomic physics and the photoelectric effect . Geitel recognized the law of decay of radioactivity and coined the term atomic energy in 1899 . In 1893 they invented the photocell .

Awards and honors

In 1899 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Göttingen and in 1915 - together with Elster - from the Technical University of Braunschweig . In 1937 the Geitelsteig in Berlin-Charlottenburg was named after him.
