history

The Paul Greifzu Stadium in Dessau was inaugurated in October 1952. It was named after the motor sportsman Paul Greifzu, who died in a training accident in Dessau in May 1952 . At that time, the stadium , which can hold 35,000 spectators, was built on dozens of tons of rubble from the city, which was badly damaged in the air raids on Dessau, in 51,000 hours of voluntary work without using investment funds . It later established itself as a venue for regional championships. During the GDR's existence, however, little was invested in the maintenance and modernization of the stadium. It was not until the mid-1990s that the city initiated a feasibility study for the redesign of the stadium. In the course of this, the renovation and expansion took place step by step in a multi-level plan. The modernization began in 1997 with the construction of the new skate track. A major innovation was the construction of a complete athletics facility. While the athletes previously had to make do with the original cinder track, they now found optimal competition conditions thanks to the new synthetic surface. Furthermore, a modern, DIN-compliant athletics facility (water ditch, shot put, javelin throw, discus throw, pole vault and two long jump facilities) was installed. In the following year, the U23 international match between Germany, Great Britain and France was the first major test for the newly built stadium.

A little later, the modern floodlight system with 1,823 lux illuminance was installed. In 2002 the sports facility received a new west grandstand with 2,048 covered seats. The last function rooms were built in 2004 below the east stand. A total of 6.7 million euros has been invested since 1996.

Every year, an athletics event called the Anhalt Meeting takes place in the Paul Greifzu Stadium . The stadium is also the home of the 1st LAC Dessau , which also includes the German triple jump champion Katja Pobanz .

Well-known football clubs such as FC Bayern Munich , which played a DFB Cup match against TSV Völpke in 2004, and a friendly game to mark the 100th anniversary of SV Dessau 05 in 2005, played in the Paul Greifzu Stadium . In addition, were Atlético Madrid and Leeds United in friendlies against Energie Cottbus in 2006 and 2007 as a guest. There were also several league cup matches with Hertha BSC and Bayer 04 Leverkusen , among others .

The stadium was one of twelve venues for the 2009 U-17 European Football Championship , which took place in central Germany .
