Giancarlo Marocchi (born July 4, 1965 in Imola ( BO ), Italy ) is a former Italian football player .

During his active career he was a midfielder and won with Juventus Turin a . a. the UEFA Champions League .

Career

In the club

Giancarlo Marocchi began his career with the club in his hometown, FC Bologna , for which he made his Serie B debut in the 1982/83 season at the age of 17 . After the descent of Rossoblu in the C1 series , he became a regular player and led the team back to the second highest Italian division. In the following years he developed into a real leader in midfield at FC Bologna.

In the 1987/88 season Marocchi was one of the main pillars of the team that made it to Serie A and was recommended for a place in one of the big clubs. For the 1988/89 season he moved to the record champions Juventus Turin , where he was immediately a regular under coach Dino Zoff and did not miss a single championship game in his first Serie A season.

At Juve , Giancarlo Marocchi won an Italian championship under Giovanni Trapattoni and later under Marcello Lippi , once the Coppa Italia , twice the UEFA Cup and in 1995/96 the Champions League . For Juventus he played a total of 319 games and scored 25 goals.

In the summer of 1996 Giancarlo Marocchi moved back to FC Bologna, where he played for four years and again showed very good performances. After the 1999/2000 season, Marocchi ended his active career at the age of 35. In 18 seasons as a professional, Marocchi played a total of 500 league games and scored 33 goals.

In the national team

In the national team Marocchi made his debut on December 22, 1988 under Azeglio Vicini . In the Italians' 2-0 win against Scotland , he was in the starting line-up for his first international match.

Between 1988 and 1991 Giancarlo Marocchi completed a total of eleven games for Italy. At the 1990 World Cup in his own country, he was also in the squad of the Italians , who took third place, but without doing a game.

After the Squadra Azzurra had missed the qualification for the European Championship in Sweden in 1992 and Vicini had resigned, Marocchi was nominated only once by his successor Arrigo Sacchi . He played his last international match on February 13, 1991 in a 0-0 draw against Belgium .
