At the age of 16, at the time with the juniors of the Grasshopper Club Zurich , Frei decided to move abroad. Only at the last second, however, a transfer to AS Roma failed , leaving him without a club. Instead of returning to his previous club, he trained with his father in one-to-one training. A few weeks later, Fulham FC signed him for their own offspring. He first went through the U-18s of Fulham FC and was later brought into the reserve team. He made his debut for the first team of Fulham on 7 July 2011 in the UEFA Europa League qualifier against NSÍ Runavík when he came on for Andy Johnson in the 72nd minute . He made his league debut on matchday 15 of the Premier League in the 2-0 defeat by Swansea City . He was substituted on for Moussa Dembélé in the 77th minute when the score was 0: 1 . In late October 2012 he was loaned to the Welsh club Cardiff City in the Football League Championship until early December 2012 .

In September 2013 Frei moved to the Turkish Süper Lig at Beşiktaş Istanbul , where he mostly had to put up with the reserve role, so that he moved to the English second division club Birmingham City in January 2017. At the end of the season he returned to Turkey with his move to Istanbul Başakşehir . He was loaned to Maccabi Haifa for the second half of the 2018/19 season and to FC Emmen for the second half of the 2019/20 season.

National team

He played seven games (four goals) for the Swiss U-18 national team and was captain for the U-19s of the Swiss national team. On February 29, 2012 Frei made his debut in the Swiss U-21 national team . He came on as a substitute for Steven Zuber in the 2-1 loss to Austria in the second half .

At the age of 18, Frei decided to play for the Turkish team in the future. On August 9, 2012, he was appointed to the squad of the Turkish national team for a friendly match for the first time , but was not used. He made his debut for Turkey against Denmark on November 14, 2012 .
