Mario Handl (born October 15, 1974 ) is a former Austrian football player and now coach .

Career

As a player

Handl began his career at SK Rapid Wien , where he later also worked for the amateurs. In 1994 he joined the second division club SV Stockerau . He made his debut in the 2nd division in September 1994 against SC Austria Lustenau . With Stockerau he had to relegate from the 2nd division at the end of the season.

He then moved to the regional division Wiener Sport-Club for the 1995/96 season . After two seasons at the WSC, he joined the second division First Vienna FC in 1997 . In four years with Vienna Handl came to 97 games in the second-highest division, in which he scored ten goals. After relegation in 2001, he left Vienna and moved to the third-class SV Schwechat . After spending six months at Schwechat, he moved to league competitor Wiener Sportklub in January 2002 . With the WSK he was able to move up to the second division at the end of the season. However, you only stayed there for one season before relegating again.

Handl then returned to the third class Vienna. Between 2003 and 2005 he played 52 games in which he remained goalless. For the 2005/06 season he moved to the PSV team for Vienna . However, he left this again during the winter break; he moved to SC Neusiedl am See . After one and a half years in Burgenland , he joined SV Wienerberg in the summer of 2007 . For the 2008/09 season he moved to the fourth-rate SC Columbia Floridsdorf . With Columbia in 2010 he was promoted to the regional league. Then he ended his career. After the end of his career, he had two short guest appearances at the lower class clubs SV Rust and FK Bockfließ .

As a trainer

After the end of his career, he became the assistant coach of Franz Maresch at his previous club, SC Columbia Floridsdorf . For the 2011/12 season he moved to the Vienna Sports Club together with Maresch . After separating from Maresch, Handl took over the sports club on an interim basis. After that he remained assistant coach under the new coach Helmut Kraft .

In December 2013 Handl became head coach of the WAF Brigittenau . In May 2014, the WAF separated from Handl. For the 2014/15 season he was coach of the fourth-class SV Würmla . In June 2015, the Lower Austrians parted ways with Handl. He then became the coach of FC Klosterneuburg for the 2015/16 season .

In January 2017 he became Franz Maresch's assistant coach at the second division club Floridsdorfer AC . In April 2017 he was given leave of absence together with Maresch. In June 2017, however, he returned to the FAC as Thomas Eidler's assistant trainer . After Eidler left the club in March 2018, Handl became the head coach of the second division side.

From the 2018/19 season he worked again as assistant coach under Oliver Oberhammer , and he also coached the fifth-rate amateurs. After separating from Oberhammer, Handl was also co under Andreas Heraf . After parting with Heraf, Handl was again interim head coach in May 2019. In the same month he was promoted again to head coach after two games as an interim coach. In June 2020, the FAC parted ways with Handl, at that time the Viennese occupied 14th place in the table after 19 rounds. Even before the separation, FC Klosterneuburg signed him again as a coach for the 2020/21 season.
