Markus Karner (born August 4, 1978 ) is a former Austrian football player and now coach .
Career
As a player
Karner started his career at SV Mattersburg . In 1992 he played briefly in the youth of SK Rapid Wien before returning to Mattersburg. In June 1996 he played his first and only game for Mattersburg in the Regionalliga .
In January 1997 he switched to SV Edelpute . For the 1997/98 season he joined the SV Sigleß . In January 1998 he moved to SC Wiesen . After six and a half years with Wiesen, Karner moved to the regional league club SV Rohrbach for the 2004/05 season . For Rohrbach he played eleven regional league games. After six months at Rohrbach, he moved to SV Schattendorf in January 2005 .
For the 2005/06 season he moved to ASK Kobersdorf , in 2008 he returned to SC Wiesen. In the 2010/11 season he played again for Kobersdorf before ending his career.
As a trainer
From the 2012/13 season, Karner acted as Heinz Griesmayer's assistant coach for the third-class amateurs at SV Mattersburg . For the 2013/14 season he was Alfred Tatar's assistant coach at the second-rate professionals from Mattersburg. In 2015 he rose to the Bundesliga with Mattersburg, now trained by Ivica Vastić .
For the 2016/17 season Karner was the coach of the fourth-class SV Stegersbach . In April 2018 they separated from Karner. For the 2018/19 season he was coach of the regional division SC Neusiedl am See . In May 2019 he moved to FC Gleisdorf 09 in the Regionalliga Mitte.
After just over a month at Gleisdorf, he left the club after the 2018/19 season and became the coach of the second division club SV Horn . In November 2019 he was replaced by Hans Kleer . At that time Horn was one point ahead of the relegation positions in twelfth place in the table.
