Liban Abdi Ali ( Arabic لبان عبدي; * October 5, 1988 in Burao ) is a Norwegian football player of Somali origin.
Career
Liban Abdi was born in Somalia, but emigrated to Oslo , Norway with his family quite early . There he played for the youth teams of Vålerenga and Skeid before he immigrated with his family to England in 2007 at the age of 14 and joined the youth academy at Sheffield United . Abdi was the first Somali football player to sign a professional contract with Sheffield United, which was initially designed for six months. After he was awarded to the lower class clubs Newport Pagnell Town and Buckingham Town , he signed a new two-year contract with the Blades in 2008. He was then loaned to the Hungarian club Ferencváros Budapest for two seasons . In Budapest he gained match experience both with the professional team and with the amateurs.
When Abdi returned to Sheffield in July 2010, his contract was canceled, so he was hired again at Ferencváros. In his second league game he scored his first goal of the season as a substitute in a 2-1 win against Kecskeméti TE . In the following two seasons he scored twice for the professional team in 29 games, with the amateurs Abdi scored a total of seven goals in 14 games. In summer 2012 he moved to the Portuguese first division club SC Olhanense . He made his league debut on August 17, 2012 in a 2-1 home win over GD Estoril Praia , he played a total of 83 minutes. In the games against FC Porto , Sporting Braga , Nacional Funchal and SC Beira-Mar , he scored four times in the first nine match days.
Abdi has the option to play for either the Somali national soccer team or the Norwegian national soccer team . So far he has not appeared in a youth national team, but would like to play for Norway in the event of an emergency. But national coach Egil Olsen has never considered him for an international match and said when announcing the squad for the World Cup qualifier against Cyprus in October 2012 that Abdi was not good enough for the national team.
In July 2013 Abdi completed a trial training session with the newly promoted German Bundesliga club Eintracht Braunschweig .
For the second half of the 2013/14 season Abdi moved to the Turkish Süper Lig to Çaykur Rizespor . He has been on loan at Levski Sofia since February 2015 .
