Achille Richard (born April 27, 1794 in Paris , † October 5, 1852 ibid) was a French botanist and medicin . He was the son of the botanist Louis Claude Marie Richard (1754-1821). Its official botanical author abbreviation is " A.Rich. "

Life

Richard was introduced to and trained in botany by his father in his childhood and youth, long before his studies. In the last days of the falling Empire of Napoleon Bonaparte he was hired as a military pharmacist until 1815. He then enrolled in 1817 at the Faculté de médecine de Paris , where his father was a professor, for medicine. There he soon advanced to teaching assistant at the Department of Botany.

His first major publication, Nouveaux Éléments de botanique , appeared in 1819 . His dissertation followed in 1820 . His scientific reputation was so great that he was elected a member of the Leopoldina that same year . The following five years were marked by both his teaching and research. Since he did not travel himself during this time, he resorted to extensive herbaria and had plant samples brought back from South America, Africa and the Antilles .

From 1826 to 1829 he went on a research trip on the research ship Astrolabe under Jules Dumont d'Urville via Abyssinia to New Zealand. He wrote about this trip together with Jean Baptiste Antoine Guillemin and Samuel Perrottet Florae Senegambiae tentamen, seu Historia plantarum in diversis Senegambiae regionibus ... etc. which was published in 1833.

In 1831, following an application process, he was appointed to the chair of biology, which his father held until his death. In the same year he was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor . When Jacques Labillardière died in 1834 , Richard was elected in his place at the Académie des sciences . Other important academies honored him with his admission. In 1849 the second state award followed with the appointment of officer of the Legion of Honor.

In addition to his teaching activities, Richard was a member of the editorial team of the botanical journal Flore des serres et des jardins de l'Europe published by Louis van Houtte .

Richard was married to Gabrielle Dorbe, the daughter of surgeon Antoine Dubois , and had three children with her.
