Hubert Dormagen

Hubert August Dormagen (born April 23, 1806 in Cologne ; † June 1, 1886 there ) was a German doctor , art collector and donor .

Dormagen studied and did his doctorate in medicine in Bonn . Then, in 1834, he practiced as a general practitioner, surgeon and obstetrician in Cologne.

He continuously expanded a collection of important works that he had taken over from a friend. He bequeathed his fortune to the city of Cologne on condition that it be used to build a home for the disabled . This was only established in 1913 in Cologne-Weidenpesch under the name “Foundation Dr. Dormagen ”opened. In 1926 a “workshop house” was added, named after its founder Anton Guffanti . It served as a home for apprentices and enabled inter-company vocational training.

Today, the Dr. Dormagen-Guffanti as a fully inpatient facility for people with disabilities in Cologne-Longerich . The Dr. Dormagen-Guffanti-Stiftung awards an annual grant to artists whose work has a positive impact on disabled people.

Hubert Dormagen died on June 1st, 1886 and was buried in Cologne's Melaten cemetery (hallway 5). The bronze medallion on the grave slab was made by Wilhelm Albermann in 1888.

The Dormagen art collection is now in the Wallraf-Richartz Museum .
