Gode zone
The Gode Zone is an administrative zone of the Somali region in Ethiopia .
It stretches from west to east across the Somali region along the northern bank of the Shabelle River and borders on the Oromia region within Ethiopia in the west and Somalia in the east . According to the 2007 census, it had 464,253 inhabitants, of whom 89,593 lived in urban areas. The capital of the zone is Gode (Godey). In 1997, of 327,156 inhabitants, 99.55% were Somali , 99.16% spoke Somali as their mother tongue. 6.65% (19,702) could read and write.
According to the documents of the Central Statistics Agency of Ethiopia from 1998 and 2005, the zone is divided into the five woredas Denan , Gode , Kalafo , Mustahil and Ferfer . In the documents from 2007, Adadle - which lies south of the Shabelle - is also counted in the Gode zone and a woreda East Imi (Imiberi) is listed. An eighth woreda Gudis (Gudhis) also appears on cards. The division within the Somali region has been changed several times, often in the context of local power struggles.
Larger places in the Gode zone are next to Gode Kalafo , Denan , Mustahil and Ferfer .
The most important Somali clan in the Gode zone are the Ogadeni Darod with various subclans. In the woredas Mustahil and Ferfer near the Somali border, Hawiye and the Rer Bare associated with them dominate , while in Gode and Denan mostly Ogadeni live. Members of different clans live in the remaining woredas.
In the Shabelle Valley, chopping farmers mainly grow maize and sorghum, which in good years covers the region's food needs and is sold as far as Somalia. Immediately north of the Shabelle valley, sorghum cultivation is associated with the keeping of cattle ( agropastoralism ), further to the north and in Adadle south of the Shabelle the keeping of camels, sheep, goats and cattle dominates. The ranchers are mostly nomads. While the Rer Bare in particular have been farming for a long time, former nomads have only recently settled in other villages and taken over the cultivation of maize and sorghum, whereby they continue to keep cattle and herds of sheep and goats. It is estimated that around 40–50% of the residents of the Gode Zone are arable farmers on the Shabelle, 25–30% agropastoralists, 20–30% pure cattle breeders and 0–5% city dwellers who do not make a living from agriculture.
The Gode Zone is affected by the conflict between the separatist Ogaden National Liberation Front and the Ethiopian army, which has intensified since 2007. Human Rights Watch said the army in particular committed human rights abuses against civilians in the zone.
