Danan (also Danaan , Amharic ደናን Denan ) is a place in the Gode zone of the Somali region in Ethiopia . It is the capital of the woreda of the same name, Danan .

The place name means "salty" in Somali and refers to the salt content in the water, which has a positive effect on the camels. The inhabitants have been farming for about a century, the most important crop is sorghum . Cattle are also kept.

According to the Central Statistics Agency of Ethiopia for 2005, Danan had 10,494 inhabitants. In 1997, 99.96% of the 7,030 inhabitants were Somali , three were Amhars .

In 2000/01 and 2006 the area around Danan was hit by drought and famine. Much of the media coverage of the 2000 drought related to Danan, as the Ethiopian authorities gave foreign media and aid organizations access primarily through the nearby town of Gode . Areas that were not (fully) under the control of the army, however, received little attention.

Since 2007 the conflict between the separatist Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) and the Ethiopian army has intensified in the Somali region . In April 2007, the ONLF attacked the military base in Danan. Human Rights Watch said that local young men were then forcibly recruited to fight the rebels and ten men who refused were shot.

In 2007, the Ethiopian Roads Authority began building a paved road from Kebri Dehar to Danan.
