Ferfer (also Fer Fer ; Somali Feerfeer , Amharic ፌርፌር Fērfēr ) is a place near the Shabelle River , on the border between Ethiopia and the Hiiraan region in Somalia . Within Ethiopia, Ferfer is the main town of the woreda Ferfer of the same name in the Gode zone of the Somali region .

In 2005 Ferfer had 4,411 inhabitants, according to the Central Statistics Agency of Ethiopia. According to the 1997 census, all 2,956 residents were Somali . The most important clans are the Hawadle- Hawiye and the Reer Aw Hassan.

Because of its location on the border, Ferfer was affected by the conflicts between Somalia and Ethiopia over the Ogaden area . So it came to skirmishes in the course of the short border war of 1964. Even after Somalia's defeat in the Ogaden War in 1977/78, the border town initially remained under the control of Somali troops, as did Mustahil , Geladin , Shilabo and other places.

Furthermore, Ferfer is the location of an important base of the Ethiopian army, from which Ethiopian soldiers intervened in the civil war in Somalia on various occasions. In June 2008, the Islamist group al-Shabaab from Somalia briefly penetrated Ferfer. In late 2009, Hezbul Islam , another group, threatened to attack the army base and government buildings in Ferfer.

Ferfer was repeatedly affected by floods on the Shabelle, including 1997 and 1999.

The Malaysian company Petronas has acquired concessions to explore for oil and natural gas in Ferfer.
