Joachim Maier (born May 5, 1955 in Neunkirchen (Saar) ) is Director at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart and heads the Department of Physical Solid State Chemistry.

Live and act

Joachim Maier studied chemistry in Saarbrücken, where he received his doctorate in physical chemistry. This was followed by his habilitation at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen . Further stations in his scientific career were the Max Planck Institutes for Solid State Research and Metal Research in Stuttgart and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , where he also taught from 1988 to 1996. In view of the prestigious reputation at home and abroad, he decided in favor of the Max Planck Society . In 1991 he was appointed Scientific Member, Director at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research and Honorary Professor at the University of Stuttgart. Joachim Maier has taught at the Universities of Tübingen, Graz and Stuttgart as well as at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is the recipient of a number of international and national prizes and a member of various national and international academies. Joachim Maier is editor of the journal Solid State Ionics and is a member of the advisory board of important scientific journals.

His main research interests include: the physical chemistry of the solid, chemical thermodynamics and kinetics, defect chemistry and transport in the solid, ionic conductors and mixed conductors, interfaces and electrochemistry. An original research area of ​​the working group has been established under the name "Nano-Ionic". In this context, the focus is on energy conversion and storage (fuel cells, lithium batteries). Joachim Maier has authored / co-authored more than 600 publications in refereed journals in these research fields.

Maier is a member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (Acatech) and the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz . In 2005 he was elected a full member of Academia Europaea and in 2019 he was admitted to the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .
