Confederacy of Ruined Lives is the fourth album by the sludge band EyeHateGod , released in 2000 .
history
After the release of the third studio album Dopesick , EyeHateGod appeared in 1996 as the opening act for Pantera and White Zombie . In 1997 the band released a split EP with the band Anal Cunt and again went on tour of America, but broke it off in August 1997; among other things because of Mike Williams' addiction to heroin and the resulting private and health problems. After this hiatus, the band split briefly to give Williams the opportunity to get his troubles under control. In 1999 the band decided to tour Europe again and record another studio album.
After the band announced their reunion, Century Media released the compilation Southern Discomfort in January 2000 , with unfinished studio recordings and various contributions from EPs and samplers, without the band's consent. Jimmy Bower explained the publication of the compilation in an interview with the online magazine Lärmbelästigung.net :
"Century Media wanted it more than something like a sign of life that we would be back before" Confederacy ... "came out."
Bassist Vince LeBlanc was no longer part of the reunited band, however, and Danny Nick from the band Suplex took over bass in his place. Already during the tour with Soilent Green and Crowbar , in the spring of 2000, Ben Stout from Soilent Green had to temporarily step in for Danny Nick after a bull terrier attacked Nick.
“We went out and wanted to get something to smoke [sic!] And the guy had a pit bull who also looked harmless. Danny played a little [sic!] With him and the cattle bit his lip off. "
Nick stayed with the band for the time being and participated in the further songwriting after the tour. In the interview, Jimmy Bower explained that the band used some of the existing material and wrote about half of the album within a month of the tour. Bower also stated that most of the songs were written before the band split up. In the booklet of the album, however, Vince LeBlanc's involvement is not mentioned. In the months of June and July of 2000, the band recorded the album. EyeHateGod recruited Dave Fortman to produce Confederacy of Ruined Lives . Fortman, who was then the guitarist for Ugly Kid Joe , later became known as a producer for bands in the Nu Metal and Melodic Hardcore genres , including the platinum album Fallen by the band Evanescence and the gold and platinum album All Hope Is Gone by the band Slipknot .
The "smoother" production, which would later contribute to Fortmann's success, was well received by critics and fans, but was subsequently rejected by Mike Williams and Jimmy Bower. Both described Confederacy of Ruined Lives as overproduced. The whole band nevertheless admitted that it was a good album in the sense of a contemporary testimony of the band at the time. After a subsequent tour of America, bassist Danny Nick was replaced in 2002 by Gary Mader.
style
According to William York, the style of Confederacy of Ruined Lives offers only minor changes from the style of the previous albums , despite a longer hiatus and short-term separation.
"Confederacy of Ruined Lives finds Eyehategod returning to the same Southern doom metal style they have become infamous for over the years."
"With Confederacy of Ruined EyeHateGod are returning to the same Southern Doom Metal style for which they are notorious."
The production, however, is cleaner and the album overall less overwhelming, but the songs are still mainly arranged around Bowers and Patton's guitars. Jimmy Bower also confirms that there were no changes to the basic song structures, but the changed production makes Mike Williams' vocals sound less guttural and the entire album sound is described by the band as being softer.
criticism
Alexander Melzer from the online magazine The Metal Observer calls Confederacy of Ruined Lives the perfect "soundtrack for a sick, hostile society". and admits that the album is "[for] fans certainly the ultimate, for me an album whose basic mood goes so against the grain". William York praised this negative mood in his review for AllMusic and explains that such an intense, qualitative and at the same time negative mood like that of EyeHateGod is difficult to find elsewhere. A similar assessment can also be found on the Whiskey-soda.de website : Editor Soda describes the sound as “sick and painful”, but admits that “fans and freaks” of Southern Sludge will please. Andreas Stappert from Rock-Hard magazine also agrees with this assessment:
“Anyone who has always liked the band will once again wallow happily in the Depri madness. The rest will not find any easier access to the music of New Orleans' Sickest this time either. "
Oliver Kast from Powermetal.de honors the consequent slowness of the band and describes the tracks as partly "more viscous like lava" and partly "more powerful like a 10m crusher off Hawaii" [sic!]. Kast admits, on the other hand, that the band bores him, especially as they play themselves into a lingering monotony from song to song. Allfredo from Terrorverlag.de also admits "that EYEHATEGOD does not entice with the power of the compositions, rather they offer a total work of art, or, hung lower, a statement against rock music as mass production". Despite this assessment, he criticizes the band's compositional skills as insufficient or “limited”. Sascha Maurer counters this on Metal-District.de :
“Your music is very intense, it is dark and threatening, just too infernal, seething, steaming, rolling sluggishly but unstoppably towards the listener. It is played by experts, you can hear that right away. Nothing is primitive or bumpy here, even if EYE HATE GOD forego fiddling. "

Remarks
- ↑ In English usage, terriers that come from the Molossian dog line are sometimes generally referred to as Pit Bulls. Therefore, the term pit bull , which is not necessarily related to the American Pit Bull Terrier , appears misleading here.
