Confederacy of Ruined Lives (2000) 10 Years of Abuse (and Still Broke) Preaching the "End-Time" Message (2005)

10 Years of Abuse (and Still Broke) is the first and so far only live album by the sludge band EyeHateGod . With the release of the album, the band fulfilled their contract with Century Media .

history

After the release of Take as Needed for Pain in 1993 there was a dispute between Century Media and EyeHateGod due to a lack of marketing opportunities for the music, which is why EyeHateGod recorded the 1995 album Dopesick without the financial support of the label . As a consequence of this development, EyeHateGod wanted to terminate the contract with Century Media and continue to operate as a do-it-yourself band .

“If we can, we want to be released from our contract so that we can continue to release records on our own label and have everything under control. Similar to MINOR THREAT , you know? Printing t-shirts ourselves , only being available via mail order , building our own world. Having total control over all of your products would be a dream. We will work on that. "

- Jimmy Bower

In September 2000, EyeHateGod released Confederacy of Ruined Lives and toured Europe. Following the tour, the band temporarily split for about ten months, which sparked lingering rumors about the band members.

"Actually, one of the rumors that I heard was that I overdosed or killed myself or something, but no. I'm doin 'fine."

“One of the current rumors I've heard was that I overdosed or killed myself or something, but no. I am fine."

- Mike Williams

Only after the release of 10 Years of Abuse (and Still Broke) did the band take on Gary Marder as the new bass player, who was already taken on a Japan tour after two concerts around New Orleans. Meanwhile, Jimmy Bower and Joey Lacaze the side project dedicated The Mystick Krewe of Clearlight among other musicians of Corrosion of Conformity , Jimmy Bower took part in the production of the live album Live Volume by Corrosion of Conformity, and Brian Patton played with Soilent Green the Album A Deleted Symphony for the Beaten Down .

Recordings

Andreas Stappert from Rock Hard calls the album "a kind of time travel through the history of New Orleans' Sickest" as a description of the combination of three different recording times. There are demo recordings from 1990, recordings of a radio concert for the station KXLU from 1994 and live recordings of the European tour in 2000. The radio concert was originally only recorded to give the future bass player Vince LeBlanc the opportunity to perform the pieces learn but has been edited and cleaned up for publication. The compilation as well as the recordings in Europe were a conscious decision of the band against a traditional live album.

criticism

Andreas Stappert does not evaluate the album, but criticizes the demo recordings of the first four pieces in "relatively poor rehearsal quality", but praises the concluding concert recordings as the "heart and highlight of the album [...], which makes the atmosphere of an EHG show quite impressive Transport into the living room at home. Real, unadorned and guaranteed without overdubs . "

Patrick Kennedy from Allmusic awards two and a half stars out of five and names the recordings consistently uglier, angrier and more aggressive than the studio versions of the songs, but otherwise sees hardly any variations in the performance.
