In the Name of Suffering (1990) Take as Needed for Pain Dopesick (1996)

Take as Needed for Pain is the second album by the sludge band EyeHateGod , released in 1993 . The members of the band consider the album to be the one in which the band's intended sound was fully consolidated for the first time.

history

In 1992 Century Media signed EyeHateGod for five albums and re-released the 1990 debut In the Name of Suffering . In the same year the band toured Europe with Crowbar , for whom Jimmy Bower played drums at the time.

During this tour to re-release the debut album, the band split from bassist Steven Dale, whose instrument was taken over by the previous guitarist Marc Schultz. Without a second guitarist, the band played a few concerts, but came to the conclusion that it didn't do justice to the sound of the band. So Brian Patton of Soilent Green became the band's second guitarist and Marc Schultz stayed on as bass player for the time being. Bower and Williams had known Brian Patton since early childhood and he had previously played in the band Drip.

The Maison Blanche building on Canal Street

In 1993 after completing the tour and returning to New Orleans, studio work on the second album could begin. Mike IX Williams, who became homeless after the tour through a breakup, slept in a room above Big Daddy's striptease club , which was only a few blocks away from the studio.

Studio 13 was on the 13th floor of the Maison Blanche building, a former department store on Canal Street, one of New Orleans' main thoroughfares . Another recording room in the studio was used by the Cash Money Crew at the same time . The gangsta rappers spent part of their free time with EHG and Marc Schultz worked with the rappers on some music videos .

In retrospect, Joey LaCaze called Take as Needed for Pain the first album that was taken seriously by the band. Singer Mike Williams also pointed out that the work on Take as Needed for Pain included the first songwriting aimed at a specific style. In addition, Patton, Williams and Schultz named Take as Needed for Pain as possibly the best EyeHateGod album.

After the release, the band toured internationally with Chaos UK , Buzzov • en , White Zombie and Corrosion of Conformity, among others . Brian Patton made the debut of his band Soilent Green after the tour, Mike Williams started working for Metal Maniacs magazine and Jim Bower worked as a drummer on the debut of the supergroup Down and later on Crowbar's album Broken Glass .

Songwriting

Singer Mike IX Williams 2011 in Roskilde

The music for the tracks Sister Fucker , White Nigger and Kill your Boss was written by Patton, Bower and Schultz months before the album was recorded. In retrospect, Bower assumes that he wrote the titles White Nigger and Sister Fucker together with Schultz within 10 minutes. Patton and Bower wrote Crime Against Skin , Blank and Take as Needed for Pain within a day just before the recording. The ambient-style title Disturbance was written entirely by LaCaze. The lyrics and titles of the pieces are almost all by Mike IX Williams. Just the title Laugh it Off , a track that consisted of a sampled laugh without exception , was edited and added by producer Robinson Mills without the band's knowledge.

"[H] e took it upon himself to call the outro 'Laugh It Off'. So after all these titles like 'Sister Fucker,' 'White Nigger,' 'Crime Against Skin,' its like, oh, but 'Laugh It Off.' Thats fuckin stupid. I was pissed, but it doesen't matter [...]. "

“He added it himself to call the outro Laugh it off . After all of the songs like Sister Fucker , White Nigger , Crime Against Skin , it's like, oh but 'do it with a laugh'. That's damn stupid. I was pissed off, but that doesn't matter [...]. "

- Williams, Mike in Bennett, J .: Hazardous Prescription.

style

William York from allmusic describes the style of Take as Needed for Pain as typical of EyeHateGod. A mixture of Doom Metal and Hardcore Punk with slow guitars, incomprehensible vocals and constant feedback. In direct comparison to the previous album In the Name of Suffering , however, the guitars in particular are warmer and more memorable. All in all, Take as Needed for Pain is the first album that brings out the typical blues rock influenced by Black Sabbath . Singer Mike IX Williams also puts the band in a similar context.

"We always just thought of the band as Southern Hardcore Blues' cos thats what it is. Blues modern drug addled and Alcohol drenched m-f'in 'BLUES. "

“We always thought of the band as southern hardcore blues because that's what it is. Blues, modern fucking blues confused by drugs and soaked in alcohol. "

- Mike IX Williams: Liner Notes for Take as Needed for Pain .

James from The Metal Observer roughly names two typical song structures, on the one hand the slow and heavy songs like Shop Lift and White Nigger and on the other hand the hardcore- influenced ones like Sister Fucker Pt. 1 and Take as Needed for Pain .

criticism

Terrorizer magazine lists Take as Needed for Pain among the 100 most important albums of the 1990s and names it the top sludge album of all time. In a foreword to an interview with singer Mike IX Williams, the website Metalnews.de describes Take as Needed for Pain as the band's classic. Lee Steadham of Satan Stole My Teddybear also calls Take as Needed for Pain the best album of the band. William York from allmusic also confirms this impression, but also points out that the titles can hardly be distinguished from one another. The supposed consistency of the pieces is also highlighted by the DeadTide.com site .

"Let's face it, if you've heard one Eyehategod song, you've heard ... most of them."

"Let's be honest, do you know a song by EyeHateGod, do you know ... most of them."
