New Orleans is the New Vietnam ( German  "New Orleans is the new Vietnam" ) is a song by the sludge band EyeHateGod . The song was released as a single in August 2012 and marks the band's first release of new sound material since the events of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, which had a profound impact on the band's history . EyeHateGod released New Orleans is the New Vietnam as a one-sided 7 "vinyl single on August 30, 2012. As a sign of life for the band, the single should accompany the European tour entitled Europe is the New Vietnam and represent a harbinger for the planned album.

effect

The title of the song aroused associations with many fans and journalists with regard to the events that Hurricane Katrina had caused and which were still significant in the year the single was released. Mike Williams, who was temporarily imprisoned in the course of the events and was subsequently destitute and homeless, does not categorically rule out the connection, but explains the title of the song primarily as a play on words.

Singer Mike Williams in 2011

“I suspect it has a lot to do with the Katrina thing and that there are still a lot of neighborhoods that are deserted and I think the homicide rate is back on top. All of that can be related to the song, that was probably on the back of my mind as I thought about the title, but mostly it was a few words that I thought would sound cool together. "

- Mike Williams

“It would be stupid to compare it with the war in Vietnam, it's not that bad on the whole. It's just a good, harsh-sounding title. "

variants

There was no song on the B-side of the single, but an imprint of the band name. The recording for New Orleans is the New Vietnam took place with professional equipment in Phil Anselmo's Nodferatu's Liar studio in Mike Williams' house, but under the conditions of a live demo recording. According to Williams, a new, more professional recording of the song was planned for the album at the beginning, but was ultimately not produced.

The single was released on the small label A389 Recordings from Baltimore . The choice fell on Don Romeo, the owner of the record company, because he, as an old friend of the band, had often proven himself to be a reliable concert agent, had wanted to cooperate with EyeHateGod for a long time and the band members liked the designs of the previous releases of the label. The 7-inch vinyl single was released in six different versions. In the regular black version as well as in limited versions in gold, green, camouflage , purple and a black and orange Halloween version.

criticism

The release was positively received by the critics. Polari Magazine highlighted the rhythm work of LaCaze and Marder. Axl Rosenberg from the online portal Metal Sucks also praises the single and describes it as simple, catchy, bluesy and so dirty that the consumer could get hepatitis from hearing it.

Quotations in the original wording

  1. I guess, it has a lot to do with the Katrina thing and how there's still a lot of neighborhoods that are still abandoned and I think right now we have the highest murder rate again. All of that could pertain to the song, so that was probably all in the back of my head when I thought of the title, but it was mainly just words that I thought sounded cool.
  2. It would be silly to compare to the war in Vietnam, it's not that bad at all. It's just a good heavy-sounding title.
