Southern Discomfort is a compilation album released in 2000 by the sludge band EyeHateGod . It includes sampler contributions, rarities and demo recordings.

Songs 1 to 6 are demo recordings of the recordings for the release of the album Take as Needed for Pain , which were released as split and single releases at the time. The other pieces are recordings of the recordings for the album Dopesick . Century added the respective pieces to the respective re-release in 2006 as a bonus piece.

history

After the release of the third studio album Dopesick , EyeHateGod toured successfully as the opening act for well-known artists such as Pantera and White Zombie . EyeHateGod released a split EP in 1997 with the band Anal Cunt and toured America. In particular, Mike Williams' heroin addiction and the resulting private and health problems led to the fact that the band broke off the tour in August 1997 and separated. For 1999 the band decided to go on a European tour again and record another studio album. After the band announced the reunion, Century Media released the compilation Southern Discomfort in January 2000 , with old studio recordings and singles, without the band's consent.

"Century Media wanted it more than something like a sign of life that we would be back before" Confederacy ... "came out."

- Jimmy Bower in an interview with Lärmbelesterigung.net

Century Media's release policy was opposed to the band, which was never involved and was unable to participate in the selection of songs or in the design. Mike Williams explained that tracks like Dopesick Jam and Methamphetamine were not intended for release in the form, and commented the release of the compilation as "dirt" and added "that album sucks".

style

William Yorke calls Southern Discomfort the typical EyeHateGod sound. York already described the band's sound as rough, angry, tough and raw for the band's debut In the Name of Suffering . The Sludge, shaped by EyeHateGod, is a mixture of Doom Metal and Hardcore Punk with different influences from Blues , Stoner Rock and Noise .

criticism

  • William Yorke calls Southern Discomfort on AllMusic a good introduction to EyeHateGod's music. Andreas Stappert from Rock Hard contradicts this assessment and recommends the album rather "for all those who have always enjoyed the weird sludge core of the anything but easily digestible band."
