Angela Missoni (2009)

Ottavio “Tai” Missoni , a track and field athlete and Olympic participant, had already started making sports suits from wool in the late 1940s , which were worn by the Italian Olympic team in 1948. In 1953 he and his wife Rosita, whom he met in 1948 at the Olympic Games in London and married in 1953, founded a small knitwear factory under the name Maglificio Jolly in Gallarte not far from Rosita's hometown Golasecca .

The Missonis initially sold their products to Italian retailers. In 1958 , striped shirt-blouse dresses for women produced for the Italian department store chain La Rinascente bore a Missoni label for the first time. In the early 1960s, the Missonis introduced the zigzag pattern on their textiles, which was to become the trademark of the Missoni brand, using Raschel machines from Rosita's grandparents who owned a textile company. With the support of the influential Italian fashion journalist Anna Piaggi , awareness of the Missoni brand increased rapidly in the years that followed. On a trip to New York City in 1965, the Missonis met the French stylist Emmanuelle Khanh, who worked as a designer for Missoni in the following seasons. The Missoni collections were presented in Milan from 1966. In the years that followed, the Missoni couple took over the creative management of the company themselves. In 1967 Missoni was invited to the then important fashion fair Pitti in Florence. At the same time, Missoni fashion was first sold in Paris. In 1969, Missoni clothing was first presented using space-dyeing .

Missoni conquered the US market through the acquaintance of the American Vogue editor-in-chief Diana Vreeland . In 1970 a Missoni shop-in-shop opened in Bloomingdale’s New York branch. In 1973 the Missonis in Dallas were given the Neiman Marcus Fashion Prize. From 1974 the Missoni catwalk shows were held regularly in Milan, and two years later the first Missoni boutique opened its doors in Milan. In 1979 the Missoni portfolio was expanded to include men's fashion. In 1980 a Missoni boutique was opened in Munich. In the same year, the first Missoni perfume for women appeared, the men's version and other fragrances followed from 1983. In the early 1980s, the interior of Fiat models was designed by Missoni. From 1983 the range was expanded to include (wall) carpets and a collection for home use. At the same time, the Missonis designed costumes for the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. In 1984 a Missoni boutique was opened on Madison Avenue in Manhattan . In the mid-1980s, the Missoni collections were supplemented by the slightly cheaper M Missoni collection for women produced by the Valentino Fashion Group .

In 1997, the Missoni surrendered their company to their children: Vittorio (1954-2013) was marketing -directors, Luca (born 1956) was chief designer of men's fashion and sports line Missoni Sport and directed henceforth the Foundation Ottavio and Rosita Missoni Foundation , and Angela Missoni ( * 1958) was appointed creative director of the house. A successful swimwear collection was added to the Missoni range at the end of the 1990s . In 2006, all Missoni perfumes launched by then were discontinued and replaced by a new women's fragrance called Missoni . In 2007 Missoni launched children's clothing for the first time. The Missoni Sport brand was discontinued in 2008 , and Angela Missoni took over the men's fashion department as creative director from her brother Luca. In 2009, members of the Missoni family again took on important management positions in the company that had previously been given to external managers.

In 2009 the first Missoni hotel opened in Edinburgh in collaboration with the Rezidor Hotel Group . Another hotel was opened in Kuwait City in 2011 . Missoni then appointed the Italian Alberto Piantoni as CEO and thus the successor to Vittorio Missoni, because he had an accident in Venezuela in January 2013 when his private plane crashed. From the 2010s onwards, Angela's Missoni granddaughter and daughter, Margherita Missoni, designed handbags for the family business. At the same time, Missoni entered into collaborations with other companies such as Converse , Bugaboo ( strollers ) and Havaianas . At the end of 2011, Missoni offered a low-priced collaboration collection in the USA in collaboration with the US department store chain Target . Missoni's annual turnover in 2013 was EUR 170 million.

In 2014, the Italian Rossella Jardini, who had previously been the creative director at Moschino since 1994 , was hired by Angela Missoni as a design consultant. A shoe collection and a new perfume license have been announced for 2014. The corporation Missoni is complete, not in the hands of the Missoni family listed and without participation by investors .
